Introduction: So, today we will continue reading the Caitanya-līlā book. First, I would like to request everyone
to please pray for His Holiness Bhakti Cāru Swami, and also there have been a lot of requests to have a ulṭa-ratha
or return ratha and so, the team is seeing, thinking if it is feasible, and they are making a new video show for that,
to give the maximum mercy to the devotees. The chapter today,

The Lord Shows His Original Form as Kṛṣṇa to the Muslim Tailor

Jayapatākā Swami: These verses are mainly in Sanskrit, and I don’t know Sanskrit. So, wherever Sanskrit is
given, we will read the translation and sometimes this Caitanya-caritāmṛta, I will read the Bengali, I mean I don’t
know Bengali, I will have the Bengali read by Deva Gaurāṅga dāsa, but we take Śrīla Prabhupāda’s translation,
these pastimes may not be elaborated previously.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi-līlā 17.231

yavanakulodbhūta darajīra prabhura rūpadarśana o unmāda—

śrīvāsera vastra siṅye darajī yavana

prabhu tāre nija-rūpa karāila darśana

Translation: There was a tailor who was a meat-eater but was sewing garments for Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura. The Lord,
being merciful to him, showed him His own form.

Jayapatākā Swami: Not only we heard how the Lord has His mercy on Śrīvāsa, Śrīvāsa’s family, his wife, his
brothers, his brothers’ wives, he had three brothers, and brother’s children like Nārāyaṇī, Śrīvāsa’s sons, of whom
one died, and whom the Lord brought back to life, to give instructions, we saw that He was so merciful to
Śrīvāsa’s whole family, and here we hear that even a meat-eating tailor of Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura, was shown special
mercy by the Lord.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.48

The Personification of Renunciation [asked], “Goddess, does not He always act as a devotee, or does he
sometimes reveal His supreme power and opulence?”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.49

Bhakti devī, Personification of Devotional Service [said], “Renunciation, Lord Hari’s ordinary pastimes are more
beautiful than His unusual pastimes. Although the Ganges flows from Lord Śiva’s head, it gives us pleasure when
it comes to earth.”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.50

Still, sometimes He does something extraordinary. One day, at Śrīvāsa’s home, a Muslim tailor, his eyes red from
drinking wine, having circumambulated the temple, and in the southern corner of the courtyard having drunkenly
begun to sew clothes, began to stare at Lord Viśvambara.”

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi-līlā 17.232

‘dekhinu’ ‘dekhinu’ bali’ ha-ila pāgala

preme nṛtya kare, haila vaiṣṇava āgala

Translation: Saying “I have seen! I have seen!” and dancing in ecstatic love as though mad, he became a first-
class vaiṣṇavas.

Purport by Śrīla Prabhupāda: There was a Muslim tailor near the house of Śrīvāsa Thakura who used to sew
the garments of the family. One day he was very pleased with the dancing of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu; indeed he
was enchanted. The Lord, understanding his attitude, showed him His original form as Kṛṣṇa. The tailor then
began to dance, saying, “I have seen! I have seen!” He became absorbed in ecstatic love and began to dance with
Lord Caitanya. Thus, he became one of the foremost Vaiṣṇava adherents of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: On seeing how Lord Caitanya gave His mercy to a drunkard, meat-eating tailor of Śrīvāsa,
and confidentially showed him His form as Śrī Kṛṣṇa. So, he became completely ecstatic, and manifested his love
for Kṛṣṇa, and started to dance saying, “I have seen! I have seen!”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.51

The sight of the Lord made him more intoxicated than any wine. With wide open eyes he called out: “I have seen!
I have seen!” He trembled. The hairs of his body stood erect. Tears flowing from his eyes bathed his chest.
Throwing down his sewing, he raised his arms and began to dance. Seeing this, the Lord innocently said to
Śrīvāsa:

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.52

2

“Śrīvāsa, what is this? All of a sudden this person has become as if celebrating a great festival!”

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya has given this person a divine realization, but He was innocently asking what
happened? Why is he celebrating like a festival?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.53-54

Śrīvāsa then jokingly said, “Lord, this is the unprecedented glory of Your intoxicating handsomeness. All he had
ever wanted was a full pot of wine. He could not give up the desire for wine. Now simply by seeing You for a
moment he is wild with intoxication. Now he has cut the bonds of birth and death. Now he purifies the world.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this shows how Lord Caitanya can transform even a meat eating, drunkard to a first class
Vaiṣṇava. We are all desiring to be happy, but our greatest happiness is actually in serving Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
This Candrodaya Nāṭaka is presenting everything as a drama.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.55

Renunciation personified said, Then? Then?”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.56

Devotional Service personified said, “That Muslim tailor took shelter of the Lord’s holy name. Giving up his
former associates, he accepted the dress of a renunciant. He continues to sing and dance, even though beaten by
the Muslim teachers. He is always engaged in chanting the Lord’s holy names.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Haribol! Haribol! By the mercy of Caitanya Mahāprabhu he was chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa
mantra, although he was beaten by his Muslim teachers. He could not stop chanting the holy name. He was
receiving such transcendental bliss.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.57

If questioned, he explains, “Viśvambara is the only Lord, there is no one else.” Provided his livelihood by all the
devotees, he travels about as a perfected soul.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this shows the realization this Muslim tailor had, and he became a pure Vaiṣṇava,
chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, he was maintained by all the Vaiṣṇavas.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.58

Renunciation personified said, “Goddess, what form of the Lord did he see?”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.59

2

Devotional Service personified said, “Oh Renunciation! The Lord’s form is bliss. The handsomeness of His form
brings the greatest bliss. His forms are different kinds of bliss, and seeing these forms brings different kinds of
bliss.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Kṛṣṇa is personified bliss and seeing Kṛṣṇa gives the devotee unlimited spiritual bliss.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.60

Renunciation personified [asked], “How could a person of such low birth attain such good fortune?”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 2.61

Devotional Service personified [said], “Ignoring noble birth, character, āśrama, occupation, schooling, and
family, Lord Hari’s mercy does not consider whether one is qualified or not qualified to receive it.”

Jayapatākā Swami: This is a special mercy of Lord Gaurāṅga. He doesn’t consider whether one is qualified or
unqualified. He gives His mercy out freely. So, one just has to be in the right place, at the right time. His Divine
Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda was giving out the mercy of Lord Gaurāṅga, and if one was
fortunate enough to be there, he got the mercy.

śrīvāsa-phālyaṁ yavanaṁ viśoḍhya

cakre subhaktaṁ svaguṇaṁ pradarśya
premṇā sumatto viṣayād virakto
yas taṁ prabhuṁ gaura-vidhuṁ smarāmi

Translation: Revealing His transcendental qualities, He purified Śrīvāsa’s Muslim servant and transformed him
into a pure devotee. I meditate on the golden moon of Lord Gaura, who is free of all material desire and
maddened with pure love.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, in the Brahma-vaivarta Purāṇa, Kṛṣṇa predicts that 5000 years after the beginning of
the Kali-yuga, will begin a Golden Age of ten thousand years, where everyone will become a devotee of Hari. So,
we see that by the mercy of Lord Caitanya, even a meat-eating drunkard, was instantly transformed into a pure
devotee. We pray for Lord Gaurāṅga’s mercy, that this Golden Age may come in very soon, and everybody may
be transformed by His mercy, they will be maddened with pure love of Kṛṣṇa. Haribol! Haribol! Haribol! Nitāi
Gaura!

Thus, ends the chapter, The Lord Shows His Original Form as Kṛṣṇa.

When we read this pastime, we have hope for special mercy. How even a person who would be considered
normally to be unqualified, he got the special mercy. What to speak of others who are aspiring to get Lord
Gaurāṅga’s mercy, who chant the holy names? So, certainly they can easily get the mercy of the Lord. But even
the persons who are hopeless, they can get spiritual blessings, by the mercy of Lord Caitanya. Now we need to see
the Lord, showering His mercy down.

Looks like a big storm coming. Alright, Questions?

Question: Dear Guru Mahārāja, please accept my respectful obeisances. Is it also the same conducting the funeral
rites by the side of the Ganges, as when we bring the ashes of the departed soul to the banks of Gaṅgā, and do the
prayers there?

Your spiritual daughter,

Kṛpātīta devī dāsī, Penang, Malaysia.

Jayapatākā Swami: Yesterday’s class, question came late, See the Ganges was brought down by Bhagīratha
Mahārāja, because his forefathers were burnt to ashes by offending Kapiladeva. So, he brought the Ganges down,
because the Ganges, if she touched the ashes of his forefathers, they would be delivered. So, your question was
whether putting the ashes in the Ganges, and from this pastime, we can see that the ashes touching the Ganges is a
mercy.

(All the windows are closed? I have to go for a few minutes. Let him give the next question)

Question: Dear Guru Mahārāja, please accept my respectful obeisances. Please bless us all. My question is
related to giving charity. In the current situation due to corona, we see that many around us are suffering in
various ways. One of our acquaintances has asked for financial help, as she was alone, away from home and sick,
and we helped that person. But when we give charity to causes other than those related to Kṛṣṇa consciousness,
does it incur karma. How do we transform it as a service to the Lord, then just to alleviate someone’s suffering?
How can we offer help without any karmic involvement of both the parties?

Your insignificant disciple,

Lakṣmī Rādhā devī dāsī, Mathurādeśa.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, it seems to be Kṛṣṇa’s arrangement that today we give class early. Because now a big
storm has come, all the translators ran away, and now would be the normal time we give class, but we gave early
today. Anyway, regarding your question, if we give charity in the name of Kṛṣṇa, saying, I am giving this to you
on behalf of Kṛṣṇa, something like that. I am giving this as part of my responsibility, because I am Kṛṣṇa’s
2

devotee. Somehow you give Kṛṣṇa the credit, that may reduce your karmic responsibility. But otherwise, if
possible, we try to give out kṛṣṇa-prasāda, or give out things which are offered to Kṛṣṇa. Then naturally there is
no karmic reaction. but as gṛhasthas, you have to give a certain amount of charity. So, we do this as part of our
service to Kṛṣṇa.

Hare Kṛṣṇa! Thank you all very much. There is a storm, all the translators have left. We will end here.

Śyāma Rasika dāsa: Guru Mahārāja, today in Aruppukoṭṭai, Tamil Nadu, they are celebrating Ratha-yātrā, They
are conducting a small Ratha-yātrā because the police have given permission to do the Ratha-yātrā in four streets,
they are asking for your blessings.

Jayapatākā Swami: I am very pleased that you are able to observe the Ratha-yātrā festival in Aruppukoṭṭai. Of
course, now is the pandemic time and Tamil Nadu is also having a bad corona virus. So, I hope that you can
observe your Ratha-yātrā in a most safe manner. But by serving the Lord of the Universe, you are undoubtedly
getting lot of blessings, and I also extend my best wishes and blessings to all of you devotees. Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Yours in service,

Jayapatākā Swami.
