DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

ASSIGNMENT: 2
DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES (3350601)

WELDED CONNECTIONS

B.E– 5th SEM CLASS: CIVIL

LAST DATE OF SUBMISSION : / / MARKS: 10

Q.1 State advantages and disadvantages of welding over bolting.

Q.2 Enlist different types of welds.

Q.3 Design a suitable fillet weld to connect to a tie plate 80 x 8 mm to a 10

mm thick gusset plate. The plate is subjected to load equal to full
strength of the member. Assume shop welding and Fe-410.

Q.4 Determine the design shear strength of fillet weld of 12 mm size. Assume
Fe-410 steel (i) Using shop welding & (ii) Using field welding

Q.5 An ISA 100 x 75 x 8 mm is to be connected to 8 mm thick gusset plate

with 100 mm leg connected by 4 mm size weld to transfer an axial
tensile force of 200 KN. Design welded connection with weld on sides only.
Assume shop welding.

Q.6 Angle section ISA 75 x 75 x 8 mm is to be connected to 8 mm thick

gusset plate by 6 mm field weld, on sides and end of the member. The
member is carrying tensile load of 100 KN. Design welded connection.
Assume Steel grade of Fe-410 and check for block shear failure.

Q.7 2-ISA 100 x100x 8 mm are connected to 8 mm thick gusset plate on

either side. The section carries an axial compressive factored load of 190
KN. Design welded connection using 4 mm side shop weld only.
