6 ABSTRACT
An annular single or mul-rotor double-walled turbine. The
turbine includes an outer shroud, an inner shroud, and a
plurality of deveshatls, The turbine also includes a plurality
ff rotors coaxially aached to the plurality of driveshafts at
spaced intervals. Fach ofthe plurality of rotors comprises a
plurality of turbine blades extending between the inner and
‘outer shrouds. Fach of the plurality of turbine blades com-
prises a face. The inner shroud and the outer shroud form a
‘continuous chanel for directing « Mid entering the turbine
towards the faces ofthe turbine blades and for directing fail
discharged from a first of the plurality ofrotorsto the remain-
‘ng rotor. The channel greatly improves efciency of poser
extraction from all augmented and non-augmented. MidPatent Application Publication Jan. 5,2012 Sheet 1 of 13 US 2012/0003077 AlUS 2012/0003077 AI

ANNULAR MULTI-ROTOR
DOUBLE-WALLED TURBINE,
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention generally elates to both wind
tnd water turbines. More specifically, the present invention
relates to an annular mulicrotor double-walled turbine, The
present invention also relates to a single rotor eross-flow
Turbine. To distinguish the additional complexity of the
present invention as compared to standard windmill, dhe
‘design of the iwention is refered to as @ Wind Power Plant
(wee).
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
10002} _‘Thepresentart for modem windmill design is based
‘on Horizontal-Avis Wind Turbines (HAW) using long,
twisted propeller type blades. In order to increase the gener
ating capacity, the two predominant variables are uid speed
and rotor swept area. The faster the nominal wind speed, the
more power is produced and, as the enemy prodiced
increases with the cube ofthe wind speed, the wind cond
tions of the locaton is of paramount importance. As such
‘windmills are placed along. coastlines of in areas of wind
velocities around 6 0-7.0 mis and above. The existing HAWT
technology cannot produce eompstitve power unless these
‘wo ahovesmentionedl conditions ate met.
10003] Windmill diameters have increased substantially
‘with the development of synthetic composite materials sack
a fiberlass, carbon fiber ete. Large HAWT bave blade
lengths that now exceed SO meters in engl, Tis long length
reflets the fact that the power produced is dependent on the
area swept by the blades. The longer the length of the blades
‘ofthe rotor the larger will eis swept area, Atthistime, there
fare no dicted commercal-sized windmills in operation.
‘Windmills operate using the velocity pressure or simply the
velocity of the wind, Lite interest oF research has been
appliedto the addition of devieeso increase the total pressure
(locity pressure and static pressure) ofthe ar stream strik-
ing the blades.
[0008] IF the total pressure of the ud stream has been
‘increased the most appropriate method of applying it to the
blades is by simply ducting theturbine. This simple preach
has been tried in the past with no commercial successes. The
‘equipment or devices needed to increase the velocity presse
increase the fabrication costs and the increase in energy was
insufficient to justify the additional costand complexity of the
‘equipment required,
[0005] One ofthe major drawbacks of simply ducting the
rotor is that much ofthe sir stream with inereased total pres-
sure will always take the path of least resistance. Much ofthe
air stream passes through the middle section of the rotor
where it develops litle oF no useful torque. FIG. 1 illustrates
the fact that a HAWT rotor hs a high torque area around the
periphery and alow torque area in its center. Fven i the aie
stream total pressure has heen increased its prefered path
‘vil be through the lw torque zone in the center af the rotor
where litle power is produced,
[0006] -Inorder fora double-walled channel o be effective,
‘most be installed around the outer edges ofthe rotors) and
the serine tunnel must continually rotate into the path ofthe
Wind. This requir that all elements be mounted on a com-
‘on strcture and thatthe stricture rotates, If an atgmenta
tion device, such as a convenzent-diverpent nozzle, is used 10

total pressure, it must aso be sup
ute and rotate withthe WPP.
Tn the case of axial rotors, the channel is circular
inlevices have
stinight alls. This requires that highly aerodynamic adapters
‘ust be installed at the enlrance af the channel to convert @
smightwalled convergent aozele toa circular bane, Si
Jarly, dhe ext from the channel requires an aerodynamie tran-
sition from circular to staight-walled nozzle,
[0008] ‘The purpose of wind augmentation devices is
Increase the total pressure ofthe airstream. In ober words,
fone of both of the velocity pressure or tate pressure arc
Increased. As such, entrance configurations such as curved
strlaces designed fo minimize entrance and disebarge fre-
tion losses are not an atygmentation device forthe simple foct
‘ha they do not augment ether the velocity pressure or static
pressure of the air steam, Similarly, exit configurations
signed to minimize exit and discharge frietion losses that
do not decrease the velocity or state pressure ofthe fluid
‘ream are not augmentation devices.
[0009] A techaology that addresses the above dilliculties
‘would greatly improve turbine efficiency, impeove the elee-
‘eieal sibility ofthe production and decrease the production
costs for electricity.
[0010 "Tere is thus presently a need for a turbine that can
‘maximize the eficiency ofthe application of an aigmented
fir tram toa turbine rotor
[011] Thereisalsoa need foran apparatus that can aecom-
:medlte the operation of several turbine rotors in series rotat-
ing t constant velocity,
[0012] There is slso a need for an adjustable width uid
channel o keep the fluid steam speed constant as the uid
Speed varies.
[0013] ‘There is also a need for an apparatus with sufficient
‘augmentation and sufficient amber of rotors and sch per
Tormance as to provide cheap competitive electricity at rele
tively low Bid speeds
[0014] There is also need fora double-walled channel hat
applies the augmented fluid stream tothe penphery of the
‘mor where the most torgue is produced and eliminates fait
ow to the low torgue zone
[01S] There is also a need for an apparatus wo enclose the
turbine rotors to minimize noise and Visual impacts,
{0016} There is also a need foran appara to remove from
the augmented fad stream all parts of the rotor with the
‘exception of the blades,
[0017] There is aso a need foran apparatus to distribute as
‘equally as possible the augmented fui stream nto the chan-
fel and tothe face ofthe rotor blades,
[0018] There is also need foran apparatus to createa WPP
that ean intezrate, into its operation, various subsystems for
‘improving performace such as a rotorsectoring system, @
{uid stream augmentation apparatus and annular rotors for
HAWT applications
[0019] There is also @ need for an apparatus to provide an
Jnnovative rotating mechanism for lange eapacity WPP with a
Jong stroctural catriage supporting a double-walled channel,
multiple rotors, generstors andl a wind augmentation device,
[0020] Thereisalsoa need foran apparatus that can aecom-
rmodate ¢ motorized compressor fan on the end ofthe rotor
shaft facing the incoming fu to nerease the Mud flow tothe
high torque zone ofthe rotor.
