Lesson Title: Life Cycle of a Chicken
Grade Level: Prekindergarten
I. Topic: Life Cycle of a Chicken
a. Skills: Retention of the life cycle, fine motor skills to cut, glue, and write their
name, gross motor skills during the song, and able to sing and move at the same
time.
b. Concepts: The life cycle of a chicken
c. Vocabulary: Life cycle, hen rooster, chick, yolk, shell, and white
II. Behavioral Objective: After completing a model, TSBWAT cut and paste the 6 stages of
a chicken in the correct order.
a. PA Standard: 3.1.PK.C3. Describe changes that occur in animals.
b. Music Standard: 9.1.M PK.B. Respond to different types of music and dance
through participation and discussion.
III. Teaching Procedure:
a. Anticipatory Set: Have all the students sit on the carpet. Ask the questions:
i. What is a life cycle? (How we grow up and change)
ii. What stages do we go through?
iii. Where do chicken come from?
iv. Do you come from an egg?
v. Chickens only live for 7-8 years. Is that a long time? So, do they move
through their stages fast or slow compared to humans?
vi. Do all animals go through a life cycle?
b. Development:
i. Read the book.
ii. Stop when the book asks a question. Have the students raise their hand if
they agree/say yes. Call on a few students to elaborate.
iii. When the book talks about a new stage in the life cycle, tape up the card
depicting that stage on the board.
iv. At the end of the book, every card should be taped up in a circle, in the
exact way the students will put their cards during the independent practice.
c. Guided Practice:
i. Have all the students stand up and listen to the instructions/movements for
the song.
ii. The teacher will go through the song once to show the students what they
will so.
iii. Then all the students will join in.
iv. Repeat the song 3 or 4 times.
d. Independent Practice:
i. Have the students sit down on the carpet again.
ii. Go over the instructions for the worksheet/craft.

iii. To make sure they understand, ask 1 or 2 students to repeat the directions
back to you.
iv. Let the students find a seat at a table that already has glue sticks, scissors,
pencils, and a worksheet.
v. Remind the students that they will share all of the materials.
vi. While the students are working, walk around the room and help any
student that seems confused, lost, etc.
vii. If some students are waiting for the scissors or glue sticks, they can write
their name on the back.
e. Closure:
i. When all the students are done, get their attention using their classroom
teacher’s quiet signal.
ii. Have 2-4 students share their worksheet and explain what the chicken life
cycle is.
iii. Then, have the students put their worksheets in their backpacks.

b. Chicken and Egg by Christine Back

d. Glue sticks
e. Scissors
f. Crayons or Markers
V. Accommodations/Adaptations: If a student finished early, they can either help another
student or draw their own chicken life cycle on the back of the worksheet.
VI. Assessment:
a. Informal: A completed worksheet and the students explanations during the
closure.
b. Formal: N/A
VII. Child Evaluation:
a. Can the students cut out the squares accurately?
b. Can the students paste the pictures in the correct order?
VIII. Self-Evaluation:
a. If I could complete this lesson again, what would I change/improve?
b. Was their enough time?
c. Did the students seem confused during the independent practice? If so, why?

“I’m a little chicken ready to hatch

Pecking at my shell with a scratch In their eggs, use their hands to scratch the shell
scratch scratch

Then when I am ready, out I leap On leap, the students jump up with their hands up

I’ll fluff my feathers with a cheep cheep For the rest of the time, the students will flap their
cheep ‘wings’ and then say cheep cheep cheep with me
