ScHooL v."Jesus COLLEGE, OXFORD.
+, Lost. 2 tries (6 poistts)—t1 goal (5 points).
This match was played on. the,School ground on Tuesday,
October 25th.” The School team was the same ‘as against Den-
stone, except that G, Curle was brought in at scrum-half.
Cottrell won the toss,.and Jesus College started against a slight
wind. The Oxford three-quarters’ very quickly got going, but
good tackling and kicking by: the Schoo! outsides relieved the
pressure, The Schoo! forwards worked their way down the field,
and Cottrell picked “up and passed out to Hemming, who was
tackled within a few feet of the'line, From the ensuing scrum,
the ball went out fo the Jesus three-quarters, who gained a lot of
ground -by accurate touch:kicking. From a loose scrum, the
batl wetit out to Eddershaw, who broke right through the School
three-quarters, and scored in a. good. position. The kick, how-
‘every failed... (0-3). .From:the drop-out the School forwards
worked their way up.the field, and. from a line-out Cottrell got
clear, away, but was well tackled. by Price-Jones, the Oxford full-
back... The School forwards were now heeling much better from
the. tight scrums,.and from one.of these the ball went to Hem-
ming, who sccred. near the touch-line. Cottrell converted (5-3).
The Wwhistle-then blew.for half-time. .Score—School, 1 goal ;
Jesus College, 4 try.
‘After the game was re-started, the School continued to press,
but failed to score. The game was now very close, but the
kicking of the Jesus outsides was much better than that of the
School backs. .The School forwards attacked time after time,
but were unable to score. “Cottrell got over the line, but “ touch”
was given. Soon after this Craig, a Jésus three-quarter, got
right away and scored near-the posts. The ‘kick failed (5-6).
The game continued even and exciting until ‘‘no-side" was
called, leaving the score :—
Jesus College, 2.tries ; School, 1 goal.
This watch was an.excellent;one both to play in and to
watch. The School team were. the better forward, but the
Oxford outsides were faster and heavier than the School backs.
The kicking of the Jesus.backs.was also better than that of the
School. The Scbool were rather unlucky to lose, as they had on
the whole the better of the game. If they had seized their
opportunities when they came, the result would certainly have
been the reverse. Hemming and Curle were good at half, but
the three-quarters did not get closé enough to their men on the
defence. ‘They all ran well in the attack. The School forwards
were, without exception; excellent, and quite mastered the Jesus
pack, c

rather. wide out; Cottrell just failed to convert (6:0). From the 25,
Oakham ‘rished the bail into the School half. Snaith broke
away but was well tackled by Wiseman, The whistle then went
for half-time, Oakham still pressing. The School were leading
(6-0). ‘The second half opened with a good run by the Oakham
three-quarters, who just failed to score. Greaves relieved with a
good ‘k. The School were continu lly sent back into their own
half by the clever kicking of the Oakham: backs, who-made full
use of the wind:, The School threes eventually got possession of
the ball from a serum and Higgins swerving through the defence
scored rather, wiie-out.. Cottrell failed to convert *(9-0). ‘From

Scuooy v. THe Leys Scoot, CamBrivcE,
Cambridge, on Tuesday, November
ist. S. Barrowclough again took G. Curle’s place at scrum half,
the latter being still on the injured list. The Leys were without
their Captain, C. V. Hawkins.
‘This match was played a
Cottrell kicked off, there being very little wind. ‘The Leys
three-quarters soon got going, but Crouch pulled down their wing
man when he was well in his stride. The School forwards then
took the ball into the Leys’ 25,".and Hemming had bard luck
with @ good attempt ata dropped goal. The Leys played 7
forwards, and their formation generally got the ball from our pack,
till, after some passing, Guinness scored for them (3-0). We then
tushed the ball right on to their line, and forced them to touch
down. | Very soon Alabaster ran excellently, and punting over the
back’s head, looked like scoring, but he was held up. From the
5 yards scrum we were gradually: forced back, but still continued
to press. Cottrell then secured the ball and made a pretty run
with Fiddian and Toikien, the last-named being tackled ‘close
to the line. Half-time arrived with the score unaltered.
In the second half play was very even, and. all our forwards
were prominent in the loose. ‘The ‘defensive work of the three-
riers was also very good, Hill in particular. following up his
kicks and often tackling the full back with the ball:
The Leys got the ball away very quickly frai the scrum, and
their three-quarters got going and enabled ‘Sutcliffe to score,
The try was unconverted (6-0) ;
Our forwards again rushed the ball up the field, Cottrell and
Fiddian dribbling very well, while Wisemam and Sanger tackled
hard. The game continued a splendid struggle, and we were
several times near scoring, while the defence ‘of the backs con
tinued to be without reproach. The Leys three-quarters always
took a-lot of stopping, but they failed to score again. The whistle
blew for ‘‘no side” leaving the School losers by 6 points to nil,FOOTBALL. 99
The seven Leys men held.our heavier scrum, and we rarely
got the ball. Cottrell led the forwards excellently in the loose, ‘:
and played a sterling game throughout, The tackling was very
good and Alabaster was perhaps the best of the threequarters
attack. Crouch tackled well but should learn to.run ‘out from
touch before ki After the match C, L: Wiseman, J. R. R.
Tolkien, and E. ian received their first colours. S.
Barrowclough received his second colours, We had the same
team as against Oakham, :

ScHoot v. Birmincuam Universtry,
Lost by 1 goal 5 tries (20 points) to 2 tries (6 points).
This match was played on the School Ground on §
November Sth. The School was still without G. Curle
half, and his place was taken by S. Barrowclough. The University,
who had a very good side out, were at full strength. Cottrell
lost the toss, and kicked off against a slight wind. The University
at once began to press, and had rather the better of the scrums,
After scrambling: play Purser scored for the University wide out.
The kick failed (0-3). Ford was very prominent for the University
in the loose, and passed out to Panton, who scored an uncon-
verted try (0-6). The School were now playing much better, and
were several times unlucky in not ‘scoring. The University’ for-
wards, however, worked’ phe, bali back into our twenty-five, and
from a line-out near the fine, Crosskey got over. This try was
unconverted (0-9). Even play followed till- half-time, which came
with the University leading by 9 points ta iil.
After the re-start the University again pressed hard, but
Crouch and Alabaster tackled well. Finally, Patterson scored
wide out, the kick again failing (0-12). Further tries were scored
in quick succession by Purser and Hildick, one of which Hildick
converted (0-20), m this point on the School, who had lasted
much better than their opponents, domiriated the game, and were
on many occasions just prevented from scoring. The School100 FOOTBAL!
SS
forwards at last got properly going, and heeled nearly every time
from the ‘scram. ~ A free-kick was given to the School, but
Cottrell failed at-goal. Shortly afterwards Higgins got over for
the School;’ Ball making a'good but unsuccessful attempt to con-
vert (3-20); From the drop-out the-School three-quarters went
right ‘iny'and Hill scored wide outy Ball again being unlucky with
@ good’ kick’ (6-20).. The ‘School. had now all the better of the
gamé, but’ the whistle fori‘ no-side” blew shortly afterwards,
leaving the University the winners by 20 points to 6
The University outsides were too big for the School back,
and with ‘their forwards, beating ours in the scrum, our three.
quarters had few opportunities. “The University victory was also
to @ large extent due to. Patterson, our last year's caplain, at
fying half, who made_excellent openings for their three-quarters,
who were all good. “The School forwards were not up to their
usual standard in this match, probably owing to the fact that they
pad already bad three hard games during the preceding week.
The game was very even in the second half, the School team
lasting’ much.better than their heavier opponents. The outsides
tackled and kicked well, but the University men were too big for
them. Crouch played pluckily at full-back, and Alabaster was ,
the best of the three-quarters,

Scuoot v. Mosetey I.
Won by 2 goals, 3 tries.(19 points) to nil.
This match was played on the School ground on Saturday,
November 12th. The School .were without Tolkien and Sands,
whose places were taken by Hemus and Payton. Cottrell lost
the toss, and kicked off against a strong Wind. The superior
weight of the Moseley pack at once told, and they began to press,
‘A dangerous rush by their three-quarters was checked by an
excellent tackle by Hill, and the School were relieved by a touch-
down and by a penalty. After some even play, a fast run by
Moseley looked dangerous, but Higgins picked ‘up from their
forwards’ feet and kicked well into touch. -A few minutes later
