Minnesota’s first green children’s hospital facility includes a seven-story, 230,000 s.f. patient
tower with 96 beds and state of the art research and treatments, including kidney dialysis,
pediatric intensive care, cardiovascular intensive care, and bone marrow transplants. A 30,000
s.f. linking building includes ORs, a new emergency department, doctor’s lounge; and 50,000
s.f. of remodeling in the existing East Building, including pediatric PACU and prep/recovery,
radiology, cardiovascular services, and adult PACU.
Built according to Green Guide for Healthcare guidelines, the facility includes eco-friendly
materials and green spaces including a vegetated roof and a heat-reflective, energy-efficient
thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roofing system. The hospital’s dramatic exterior is clad in
22-gauge stainless steel sheets dipped in an electrically charged well of chemicals that shift in
color when viewed from different angles.

Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital

KA assisted in the selection of the architect for this project, a 182,500 s.f.
replacement hospital and clinic located on a new 77-acre site. Prior to
construction, KA wrote a site-specific infection control plan, which was
meticulously implemented to prevent mold and other infection agents
from entering during construction.

Gundersen Lutheran Hospital & Behavioral Health Center
La Crosse, WI
This 400,000 s.f., 6-story hospital is being built in phases and includes
all-private patient rooms, new ORs and expanded pre- and post-op areas,
improved medical, surgical and critical care units, centralized services for
women and children including a new neonatal intensive care unit, and
a comprehensive trauma and emergency center with adjoining imaging
services.
The 2-story, 54,000 s.f. Behavioral Health Center takes a patient- and
family-centered approach to inpatient mental health care. Included
are 34 private patient rooms, with separate units for adults, acute care,
adolescents, and special care. Other amenities include meditation center,
courtyard, exercise rooms, and an open design with numerous public
and private areas to promote patient-staff interaction. Neutral colors and
natural light enhance the homey, non-institutional ambience.

This 2-story, 120,000 s.f. critical access hospital provides 52 exam rooms, 25
inpatient rooms, 11 private pre- and post-operative recovery rooms and
high-tech medical equipment including 64-slice CT scanner, new onsite
MRI, and onsite nuclear medicine scanner. The facility’s soothing, prairie-
style architecture is complemented by sustainable features including
a green roof, rain gardens, and regionally-sourced materials including
rough-cut Kasota stone, masonry, and timber.
