Seasonal Occurs because of the seasonal nature of some jobs (such as
tourist related occupations) and during periods of the year
(especially between December and March) when new school
leavers enter the job market.

Underemplo Individuals that have part-time jobs but would like to work more
hours per week are said to be underemployed. Estimates of the
yed level of underemployment in Australia have risen dramatically over
the past decade as an increasing share of jobs are on a part-time or
casual basis

Hidden Some individuals may not be counted in the official


(Unofficial) unemployment figures - because they have given up
actively seeking work or have gone back to school - yet
are still part of the unemployment problem.

Hard Refers to those individuals who might be considered


unemployable because of some personal characteristic,
Core such as a mental or physical disability, anti-social
behaviour or drug abuse.

Cyclical Results from the ups and downs of the business cycle.
During a downturn, firms respond by cutting back
production levels and laying off workers.

Frictional Occurs as people change jobs - it usually takes some time


to move from one job to another.

Long term U refers to those people unemployed for 12


months or more, often due to structural UE.

Structural Occurs because of a mismatch between the skills


demanded by employers and those possessed by
unemployed people. The restructuring of the economy
from old industries to emerging industries and the
introduction of new technology usually results in
higher structural unemployment.
