In Sicilia lived a king named Leontes. He invited Polixenes, the King of Bohemia to visit him and his Queen. Leontes and Polixenes had been friends since childhood. Polixenes arrived at the castle of King Leontes, who became very happy on seeing his childhood friend. Leontes told his wife, Hermione, to look after his friend, and to leave * nothing to chance. After a few days of hospitality, Polixenes told Leontes that he wished to return to his own home. Leontes wanted Polixenes to stay for a few days more, but Polixenes was worried about his own home. He turned down his friend’s offer and decided to leave Sicilia at once. Leontes tuned to his wife Hermione and asked her to convince his friend to stay. Like a dutiful wife Hermione requested Pélixenes to stay for some more time. Hermione’s gentle words were so moving that Polixenes could not refuse, He was convinced that any refusal to the entreaties of her royal hostess and her dear friend’s wife would amount to rudeness. Polixenes decided to stay for a few more days. However, Leontes, instead of being pleased with his wife's gracious charm and his friend’s chivalry, became extremely suspicious of them. His jealousy and extreme suspicion led Leontes to believe that Polixenes and Hermione ‘were having an affair. He called for Camillo, one of his trusted lords, and told him that his wife and friend were having an affair. He ordered Camillo to poison Polixenes. Camillo was convinced that Leontes was suspecting wrongly. He requested Leontes to rethink about the whole affair, Leontes became enraged at Camillo's needless advice. Camillo reatised that his own life may be in danger. He took a vow to kill Polixenes, but went and told him about the king’s plan to poison him. They both decided to run away from Sicilia. They made arrangements and managed to escape from the clutches of the wrathful and stupid king. P.T.O.
