(i) Derive an expression for the power radiated by a relativistic point charge
moving in an external electromagnetic field in terms of the external field E, ~
B~ and the particle’s velocity ~v .
(ii) Using the expression in (i) find the power radiated by a relativistic particle
with charge q1 which passes with impact parameter b through the Coulomb
field of a fixed second charge q2 . The position of q1 can be given by ~r(t) =
bŷ + z(t)k̂.
Hint: You can use the relativistic expression:

µ0 q 2 dP µ dPµ

P =−
6πcm2 dτ dτ
where dτ = dt/γ is the proper time element and P µ is the four momentum
vector of the particle with charge q.

5.
(i) A particle carrying charge q falls freely with a constant acceleration g.
What is the power radiated and the radiation reaction force?
(ii) If the particle performs simple harmonic motion, say ~r = A cos (ωt)ẑ,
calculate the power emitted, Prad ?
Is the power corresponding to the radiation reaction force the same as the
power Prad ?

6.
An electric charge Q is distributed within a volume V so that the distribu-
tion is spherically symmetric for all times. The distribution undergoes radial
oscillations (total charge remains the same always). What is the power radi-
ated?
(No other sources of electromagnetic fields are present anywhere in space).
