SUMMARY
The story of "The Canterville Ghost" talks about Otis family, that came from America to live
in an old house, in the middle of the countryside, in England.
They were warned that the old house was haunted by the Canterville Ghost, called Sir
Simon, who was bad because he murdered his wife and frightened the people who entered
the house. The American family didn't believe in ghosts, so they decided to buy the house. As
soon as they arrived they saw a quick change of the weather: suddenly it began to rain and,
from that day, many strange and mysterious things happened.
One night Sir Simon appeared: he was an old man, he wore old-fashioned clothes with
chains hung from his wrists and ankles; he tried to frighten the Otis family, but every time
they stayed calm and, on the contrary, their sons joked with him.
One day Mr. and Mrs Otis' daughter, Virginia, disappeared. She was the only person who
didn't joke with the ghost so, that night, he asked her to help him to find peace forever.
Virginia decided to help him because she understood the ghost was good. Finally the ghost
found peace and Virginia appeared and, in the end, the family lived happily without the
ghost.

himself. We know that Huck has become rich from his last adventure with Tom Sawyer and
that the Widow Douglas and her sister, Miss Watson, have taken Huck into their home in
order to try and teach him religion and proper manners.
One day Huck discovers that his father, Pap Finn, has returned to town and he is worried
about Pap's intentions, because he's a violent alcoholic man. When Pap confronts Huck and
warns him to quit school and stop trying to better himself, Huck continues to attend school
just to spite Pap. Huck's fears are soon realized when Pap kidnaps him and takes him across
the Mississippi River.
Huck becomes comfortable with his new life, free from religion and school, but Pap's
beatings become too severe, and Huck fakes his own murder and escapes down the
Mississippi. He arrives at Jackson's Island, and there he stumbles across Miss Watson's
slave, Jim, who has run away for fear he will be sold.
Huck and Jim soon escape down the river on a raft. Their freedom and tranquility are
shattered by the arrival of the duke and the king, who force Huck and Jim to perform
scams. The duke and the king sell Jim back into slavery and when Huck goes to find Jim, he
discovers that he is being held captive on Silas. Tom Sawyer soon arrives and he suggests
concocting a plan to free Jim. When the escape finally takes place, a pursuing farmer shoots
Tom; because Jim will not leave him, he is again recaptured and taken back to the Phelps
farm. At the end, Jim is finally set free and Huck ponders his next adventure away from
civilization.
