(1) In that many were ‫ ַרבִּ ים‬3 ‫( בִ הְ יוֹת כִּ י הוּשָׂ מוּ‬1)
placed to write the account ‫לְ חַ בֵ ר ִסיפוּר הַ ְדּבָ ִרים אֲ שֶ ר‬
of the matters that
are trustworthy among us, ‫( בִ לְ ִתי‬2) ‫בֵ ינֵינוּ הֵ ם נֶאֱ מָ נִ ים‬
(2) without doubt, as they ‫ כַאֲ שֶ ר הִ גִ ידוּ לַנוּ אוֹתָ ם‬4 ,‫סָ פֵק‬
told them to us
themselves, those who saw ,‫ אֲ שֶ ר ִמ ְתחִ לָה ַראוּם‬,‫בְ ﬠַ צְ מַ ם‬
them from the beginning, ‫ הַ דָ בָר‬5 ‫וְ הָ יוּ ְמשַ ְרתַ י‬
and were my servants [of]
the Word,
(3) it seemed also right to ‫ אֲ שֶ ר‬,‫( ְנִראָ ה לִ י גָם כֵן אֲנִ י‬3)
me, because from the ‫פָשׂ ִתּי כָל‬
ְ ִ‫ִמ ְתּחִ לָה ח‬
beginning I sought all the
things in order, to write to ,‫הַ ְדּבָ ִרים בִ ז ְִריזוּת ﬠָל הַ סֶ דֶ ר‬
you with speed, dear ,‫לִ כְ תוֹב לְ � הַ יְ קָ ר ִטיאוֹפִ ילּוֹ‬
Theophilo,
(3) in order that you would ‫א ֲִמתּוּת‬ ‫(כְ דֵ י שֵ תֵ דָ ע‬4)
know the truth of the matter : ָ‫הַ ְדּבָ ִרים אֲ שֶ ר לַמָ דְ ת‬
that you have learned.

(5) And it came to pass in �ֶ‫( וַיְ ִהי בִ ימֵ י הוֹרוֹדוֹס מֶ ל‬5)
the days of Herod, King of ‫וּשמוֹ‬ ְ ‫יְ הוּדָ ה כֹ הֵ ן אֶ חַ ד‬
Judah, a certain Kohen, his
name was
Zechariah from the sons of ‫ְזכ ְַריָה ִמבְּ נֵי אֲבִ יָה וְ ִא ְשתוֹ‬
Aviyah, and his wife from ‫ִמבְּ נֵי אַ הֲרֹן‬
the children of Aaron
and her name was Elisheva. ‫( ַויִהְ יוּ‬6) ‫וּשמָ הּ אֱלִ ישֶ בָ ע‬ ְ
(6) And both of them were ‫ְשנֵיהֶ ם צַ ִדיקִ ים לִ פְ נֵי יְהוָֹה‬
righteous before Yehovah
and walking in all the ‫וּמ ְשפְ טֵ י‬ ִ ‫וְ הוֹלְ כִ ים בְ כָל חוּקֵ י‬
statutes and judgements of ‫ﬠָרמָ ה‬
ְ ‫יְ הוָֹה בִ לְ ִתי‬
Yehovah, without guile,
(7) and they did not have ‫( וּבַ נִ ים ל ֹא הָ יוּ לָהֶ ם כִ י‬7)
children; Elisheva was ‫אֱ לִ ישֶ בָ ע הָ יְתָ ה ﬠֲקָ ָרה‬
barren
and both of them were ‫ וַיְ הִ י‬:‫וּשנְ יהֶ ם בָ ִאים בַ י ִָמים‬ ְ
advanced in years. (8) And ‫( ְזכ ְַריָה הַ כְ הוּנָה‬8) 7 ‫בַ כֹּ הֵ ן‬
the Kohen Zechariah had
the priesthood
before Adona[i] Yehovah8 ‫לִ פְ נֵי אדנ]י[ יְהוָֹה בְ סֶ דֶ ר‬
in the order of his family, ‫( כְ ִמנְ הָ ג ﬠֲבוֹדַ ת‬9) ‫ִמ ְשפָחְ תוֹ‬
(9) according to the custom
of the service of the
‫הַ כְּ הוּנָה‬
priesthood.

the lot fell upon him to ‫גוֹרל ﬠָ לָיו ל ִַשׂים אֶ ת‬ ָ ַ‫בָ א ה‬
present the incense. And he ‫ ַו ָיב ֹא בְ הֵ יכָל‬:‫טֹרת‬ ֶ ְ‫הַ ק‬
came into the sanctuary of

Yehovah (10) and the ‫( וְ כָל ִריבוּי הַ ﬠָ ם‬10) ‫יְ הוָֹה‬
multitudes of people were ‫עוֹמ ִדים בַ חוּץ לְהִ ְתפַ ֵלל בְ ﬠֵת‬ ְ
standing outside to pray at
the time of the
incense (11) and the angel ‫( ַוי ֵָרא אֵ לָיו‬11) ‫טֹרת‬ ֶ ְ‫הַ קּ‬
of Yehovah appeared to ‫ימין‬ ִ ִ‫מַ לְ אָ � יְהוָֹה עוֹמֵ ד ל‬
him, standing at right of the
altar of
‫ִמזְבַ ח‬
incense and (12) Zechariah, ‫( וּ ְזכ ְַריָה‬12) ‫טֹרת‬ ֶ ְ‫הַ קּ‬
when he saw him, was ‫בִ ְראוֹתוֹ נִבְ הָ ל וּפָ חָ ד אַ חַ זַהו‬
terrified and fear seized
hold of him. (13) And the
‫( וַי ֹאמֶ ר �ו‬13)
angel said to him
“Do not fear, Zechariah, ‫הַ מַ לְ אָ � אַ ל ִת ָירא ְזכ ְַריָה כִ י‬
for your prayer is heard, ‫ וְ אֱ לִ ישֶ בָע‬9 ‫נִשמֶ ﬠֶת‬ ְ �‫ְתפִ ָל ְת‬
and Elisheva
your wife will give birth to ‫ִא ְש ְת� תֵ לֵד בֵ ן וְ ִתקְ ָרא ְשמוֹ‬
a son and you shall call his ‫( וְ יִ הְ יֶה לְ � לְ שָׂ שׂוֹן‬14) ‫יוֹחָ נָן‬
name Yochanan (14) and
there shall be to you joy and
‫ולְ ִשּׂ ְמחָ ה‬
happiness

and many will be happy at ‫יִש ְמחוּ ָרבִ ים בְ ﬠֵ ת הִ וָלְ דוֹ‬ ְ ְ‫ו‬
the time of his birth, (15) ‫( כִ י ִיהְ ֶיה גָדוֹל לִ פְ ֵני‬15)
for he will be great before
Yehovah and will not
‫יְ הוָֹה וְ ל ֹא‬
drink wine or strong drink ַ‫יִ ְשתֶ ה יָיִן וְ שֵׁ כַר וְ יִמָ לֵא מֵ רוּח‬
and he will be filled from (16) ‫הַ קֹ דֶ ש ִמבֶ טֶ ן ִאמּוֹ‬
the Ru’ach HaKodesh from
the womb of his mother
‫וְ י ִַשׁיב‬
(16) and he will return
many of the sons of Israel ‫ַרבִּ ים ִמבְּ נֵי יִ ְשׂ ָראֵ ל אֶ ל יְהוָֹה‬
to Yehovah their Elohim ‫( וְ הוּא ֵילֶך‬17) .‫אֱ �הֵ יהֶ ם‬
(17) and he will walk
before him
‫לְ פָ נָיו‬
in the spirit and power of ‫בְ רוּח וְ כֹ ח אֵ לִ יָהוּ לְ הַ ִשׁיב לֵב‬
Eliyahu, to return the heart ‫ וְ הַ ִמינִ ים‬.‫אָ בוֹת ﬠַ ל בָ נִ ים‬
of the fathers to the sons
and [he will return] the
heretics
to the righteousness of the ‫ וּלְ הַ כִ ין‬.‫לְ צִ ְדקַ ת הַ צָ ִדיקִ ים‬
righteous ones and to (18) .‫לַיְ הוָֹה הַ ﬠָ ם מוּכָן‬
prepare to Yehovah the
people, prepared.” (18) ‫וַי ֹאמֶ ר ְזכ ְַריָה‬
And Zechariah said
to the angel, “How will I ‫אֶ ל הַ מָ לְ אָ � בַ מָּ ה אֵ דָ ע הַ דַ בָ ר‬
know this matter, for I am ‫הַ זֶה יַﬠַן אֲ שֶ ר אֲנִ י זָקֵ ן וְ ִא ְש ִתי‬
old and my wife

is advanced in years?” (19) ‫( ַויַﬠָן‬19) ‫בַ אָ ה בַ י ִָמים‬
And the angel answered ‫ אָ נֹ כִ י גָבְ ִריאֵ ל‬.‫הַ מַ לְ אָ � וַי ֹאמָ ר‬
and said, “I am Gabriel
who stands
‫הַ עֹ ומֵ ד‬
before Yehovah and I was ‫לִ פְ נֵי יְהוָֹה וְ נִ ְשלָחְ ִתי לְ דָ בֵ ר‬
sent to speak to you and ‫אֵ לֶי� וּלְ הַ גִ יד לְ � הַ ְדּבָ ִרים‬
tell you these matters
‫הַ אֵ לֶה‬
and behold, (20) you will ‫( אָ תָ ה ִתהְ יֶה ִאלֵם‬20) ‫וְ הִ נֵּה‬
be mute and will not be ‫וְ ל ֹא תוּכַל לְ דַ בֵ ר ﬠַ ד הַ יוֹם‬
able to speak until the day
that ‫אֲ שֶׁ ר‬
these things are done, ‫ֵיﬠֲשׂוּ הַ ְדּבָ ִרים הַ אֵ לֶּה ﬠַ ל‬
because you did not believe ‫אֲ שֶ ר ל ֹא הֶ אֱמַ נְתָ לִ ְדבַ ָרי‬
my words, that
‫אֲ שֶ ר‬
they would be fulfilled in ‫( וְ הַ ﬠָ ם‬21) .‫יִתמַ לְ אוּ בְ ﬠִ תָ ם‬ ְ
their time.” (21) And the ‫הָ יוּ ְמיַחַ לִ ים אֶ ת ְזכ ְַריָהוּ‬
people were waiting for
Zechariah and wondering
‫וְ נִ ְתמָ הִ ים‬
because of his delay in the (22) .‫מֵ ִאיחוּרוֹ בָ הֵ יכל‬
sanctuary. (22) And when ‫וּבְ צֵ אתוֹ חוּצָ ה ל ֹא הַ יָה יָכוֹל‬
he came out outside, he
was not able to speak ‫לְ דַ בֵּ ר‬

with them. And they knew ‫ ַוי ְֵדעוּ כִ י ַראָ ה מַ ְראָ ה‬.‫ﬠִ מָ הֵ ם‬
he saw a vision in the 10
‫ וְ הוּא הָ יָה רוֹמֵ ז‬.‫בַ הֵ יכָל‬
sanctuary. And he was
gesturing to them,
‫לָהֶ ם‬
but remained a mute. (23) ‫( וַיְ ִהי‬23) .‫וְ נִ ְשאָ ר ִאלֶם‬
And it came to pass when ‫כִ ְמל ֹאת יְמֵ י ﬠַבוֹדָ תוֹ ַו ֵילֶך‬
the days of his service were
fulfilled and he went to
‫אֶ ל‬
his house (24) and after ‫( וְ אַ חַ ר הַ י ִָמים‬24) ‫בֵ יתוֹ‬
these days, Elisheva his ‫הַרתָ ה אֱ לִ ישֶ בָע‬ ְ ‫הַ אֶ לֶה‬
wife became pregnant.

And she hid five months ‫ ו ִַתסָ תֵ ר חַ ִמשָּׁ ה‬.‫ִא ְשתוֹ‬
saying, (25) “Why did ‫( לַמָ ה זֶה‬25) ‫ח ֳַֹד ִשים לֵאמֹ ר‬
Yehovah do this
‫ﬠַ שָ ה‬
to me in the days that I see, ‫יְ הוָֹה לִ י כֵן בַ י ִָמים אֲשֶ ר אָ נֹ כִ י‬
to raise up my proverb ‫ַשאת ְמשָ לִ י בֵ ין‬ ֹ ֵ ‫ ל‬.‫רוֹאָ ה‬
among
the people?” (26) And in ‫( וּבַ חֹ דֶ ש‬26) .‫הַ אֲ נ ִַשׁים‬
the sixth month, the angel � ָ‫הַ ִשּׁ ִשׁי נִ ְשלַח הַ מָּ לְ א‬
Gabriel was sent from
‫גַבְ ִריאֵ ל מֵ אֶ ת‬
Yehovah in a city of the ‫וּשמָ הּ‬
ְ ‫יְ הוָֹה בְ ﬠִ יר הַ גָלִ יל‬
Galilee, and its name was ‫( אֶ ל בְ תוּלָה אַ חָ ת‬27) ‫נַצַ ֵרת‬

Natzaret, (27) to a certain
virgin
who was betrothed to a ‫וּשמוֹ יוֹסֵ ף‬ ְ ‫שה לְ ִאישׁ‬ ֹ ָ ‫אוֹר‬
ָ ‫ְמ‬
man and his name was ‫ִמבֵ ית דַ וִ ד וְ שֵ ם הַבְ תוּלָה‬
Yoseph from the House of
David and the name of the
virgin was
Miryam. (28) And when ‫( וּבְ ב ֹא הַ מַ לְ אָ ך‬28) .‫ִמ ְריָם‬
the angel came to her he 11

said, “Shalom to you, full
of
‫ְמלֵיאָ ת‬
grace, Yehovah is with ‫בוֹרכֶת אָ ְתּ‬ ֶ ‫חֵ ן יְהוָֹה ﬠִ מָ � ְמ‬
‫( וַתָ בֵ ט‬29) .‫בֵ ין הַ נ ִָשׁים‬

you, you are blessed
among women.” (29) And
she looked and was
‫ו ִַתבָ הֵל‬
frightened
because of his words. And ‫ וְ הָ יְתָ ה חוֹשֶ בֶ ת מָ ה‬.‫ﬠַ ל ְדבַ ָריו‬
she was thinking, “What ‫( וַי ֹאמֶ ר‬30) .‫שָ �ום הָ יָה זֶה‬
sort of ‘Shalom’ was this?”
(30) And the angel said
to her, “Do not fear, .‫ָלהּ הַ מַ לְ אָ ך אַ ל ִת ְיר ִאי ִמ ְריָם‬
Miryam. For you have ‫את חֵ ן לִ פְ נֵי יְהוָֹה‬
ְ ַ‫כִ י מַ צ‬
found favor before
Yehovah.

The variant form �‫( לִי‬instead of the expected �ָ‫ )ל‬is documented in Jewish sources such as Mishnah, Yevamot 15:3
in the Kaufmann manuscript. The Historical Dictionary of the Academy of the Hebrew Language documents 164
instances of this form.

The Hebrew is ambiguous and can mean “Yehovah is with you” or “Yehovah be with you”. The former is a
statement, while the latter is a blessing. This ambiguity plays a key role in this passage as well as in Judges 6:12-13.

(31) Behold you are ‫הָרה וְ תֵ לֵד בֵ ן‬ ָ �‫( הִ ָנ‬31)
pregnant and will give birth ‫( זֶה‬32) ַ‫את ְשמֹ ו יֵשוּﬠ‬ ְ ‫וְ קַ ַָר‬
to a son and will call his
name Yeshua. (32) This
‫יִ הְ יֶה גָדוֹל‬
one will be great
and will be called Son of ‫וְ יִ קָ ֵרא בֵ ן ﬠֵ לְ יוֹן וְ יִתֵ ן �ו יְהוָֹה‬
the Most High and ‫אֱ �הִ ים כִ סֵ א דָ וִ ד‬
Yehovah Elohim will give
him the Throne of David
his father (33) and he will ‫( וְ י ְִמ�ו� ﬠַ ל בֵ ית‬33) ‫אָ בִ יו‬
reign over the House of ‫ וְ ל ֹא יִהְ יֶה קֵ ץ‬.‫ַיﬠֲקֹ ב לְ עוֹלָם‬
Ya’akov forever. And there
will be no end
to his kingdom.” (34) And ‫( וַת ֹאמֶ ר‬34) .‫לְ מַ לְ כוּתוֹ‬
Miryam said to the angel, ‫ִמ ְריָם אֶ ל הַ מַ לְ אָ ך אֵ י� יִהְ יֶה‬
“How will this be,
‫זֶה‬
for I have not known a (35) .‫כִ י אֵ ינֵנִּ י יוֹדַ ﬠָ ת ִאיש‬
man?” (35) And the angel ָ‫ַויַﬠָן הַ מַ לְ אָ ך ַוי ֹאמֶ ר אֵ ֶליה‬
answered and said to her,
“The Ru’ach
ַ‫רוּח‬

HaKadosh15 will enter you ‫ וְ עוֹז‬13 ‫הַ קָ דוֹש יַב ֹא בִ יך‬
and an exalted might will ‫ ﬠַ ל אֲ שֶ ר‬14 �ַ‫ﬠֵ לְ יוֹן יִהְ יֶה בְ צִ ל‬
be in your shadow.
Because he that will be

born will be

was next to Elohim

man sent from God

came in testimony, to
testify concerning the light ‫לְ מַ ﬠָן‬
in order

testifying concerning the ‫( הָ יָה‬9) .‫לְ הַ ﬠִ יד ﬠַ ל הַ אוֹר‬
light. (9) It was true light, ‫אוֹר אַ ִמ ִתּי הַ מֵ ִאיר לְ כָל‬
to shed light on all
to every man who enters .‫אָ דָ ם הַ בָ א אֶ ל הַ עוֹלָם הַ זֶה‬
into This World. (10) He ‫( הוּא הָ יָה בַ עוֹלָם‬10)
was in the world

accepted him and believe
‫קִ בְ לוּהוּ וּמַ א ֲִמינִ ים‬
in his name, he gave 21
‫בִ ְשמוֹ נָתַ ן מֵ ְמשָ לָה שֶ יִהְ יוּ‬
dominion that they would 22
‫( אֲ שֶ ר‬13) .‫בְ נֵי הַ אֱ �הִ ים‬
be Sons of Elohim. (13)
For they were not born out
‫הֵ ם ל ֹא ִמדַּ ם‬
of blood
and not out of the desire of ‫וְ ל ֹא מֵ חֵ פֶץ הַ בָ שָׂ ר וְ ל ֹא מֵ חֵ פֶ ץ‬
the flesh and not out of the ‫אָ דָ ם נוֹלָדוּ כִ י ִאם מֵ אֶ ת‬
