 San Francisco Conference, 24 October: UN Charter enters into force
 Preamble: “We the people of the United Nations determined to save succeeding generations from
the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind.”
 51 original members. 193 today --UN Headquarters New York

Bangladesh and
United Nations have

IN UNITED Bangladesh is one
NATIONS of the largest troop
contributing
countries in the
world.
Bangladesh established initial links with the UN during the period of War
of Liberation in 1971.
Besides being a war of liberation it was also a fight against violations of
basic human rights.
UN's involvement in Bangladesh's war of liberation was mainly in:
a. Taking stand against violation of human rights; and
b. Providing aid to the refugees.
United Nations started its relief activities in the then occupied Bangladesh.
On July 1971 United Nations East Pakistan Relief Operation (UNEPRO)
started and also emergence of Bangladesh
Bangladesh formally joined the
United Nations as its 136th
BANGLADESH Member state on 17 September
IN UNITED 1974.
NATIONS After a week, on 24 September
1974, Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman gave a speech
in Bangla in the UN
 Since its entry as a member state, Bangladesh has been
playing significant role in the World Body.
 Itis involved in political, security, economic and social
spheres of the UN activities.
 Inpursuance of its national policy Bangladesh lays
emphasis on five key areas, namely development,
environment, democracy, human rights and
peacekeeping.

BANGLADESH IN UNITED NATIONS


Bangladesh also participated in all major UN
sponsored conferences, and the conference
held in 1990s under UN auspices are
considered to be important as they
succeeded in adopting Declarations and
plans of action by consensus

i.e.Universal declaration on human rights


Bangladesh has ratified or acceded to most of
the UN instruments such as conventions, treaties
and protocols. Of these some core conventions,
treaties and protocols that Bangladesh ratified or
acceded include: International Convention on the Elimination of All
Forms of Racial Discrimination, Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of
Discriminations against Women (CEDAW)
 Bangladesh was elected
as a member of the
prestigious Economic
and Social Council
(ECOSOC) for the term
2020-2022 from the Asia-
Pacific region by
securing 181 votes out of
191
 Bangladesh has made its deep commitment to
international peace and cooperation in many ways.
Bangladesh was inspired and synchronized the
adoption of the Declaration and Programme of
Action for a Culture of Peace in 1999 at the 54th
session of the UN General Assembly.

Peacekeeping operations

32 years back, Bangladesh assumed its responsibility to progress global peace and
security.

It started with 15 peacekeepers in UNIIMOG (United Nations Iran-Iraq Military


Observer Group) – which was a bold step for a young nation like Bangladesh.

Since then Bangladesh has not only escalated its troop contribution but equipped
the Peacekeepers to perform effectively and actively in challenging missions.
Bangladesh UN Peacekeeping Force
• one of the largest contingent force of the United
Nations -- Second largest number of personal from
Asia. Bangladesh first sent its soldiers to peacekeeping
operations in 1988.
• 6359 UN peacekeepers from Bangladesh Army, Navy
and Air Force are deployed in 08 ongoing UNPKOs in
08 countries
Bangladesh peacekeepers have been deployed in a
number of countries such as east Timor, Lebanon, South
Sudan, Namibia, Haiti, Liberia, etc.

UN PRESENCE IN BANGLADESH

Currently the United Nations system has a large presence in


Bangladesh.
23 UN agencies/programmes are now at work alongside the
government and the people of Bangladesh for their development
and prosperity.
Their area of work includes economy,energy, environment,
contingencies, education, disaster, food, gender, good
governance, health, human rights, indigenous people,
migration, nutrition, participation, population, poverty,
refugees, urbanization, employment and livelihood.
UN agencies provide major policy support, resulting in
promulgation of Acts and Ordinances in governance and
human rights issues, and development of critical plan of
actions and guidelines in health, education, environment
and other economic and social sectors………...

(2017-2020) – based on the
Secretary-General’s “Road to
UNDAF 2017-2021 Dignity by 2030” vision and the
Outcomes are aligned with the
SDGs, the priorities set in the
Government of Bangladesh’s
7th Five-Year Plan and Vision
2021.

member state of the ILO since 22
June 1972 and has ratified 35 ILO

Making the People SDGs a reality
The UN in BD together with GoB and other are working towards
equal rights, access and opportunities for people:
• Empowered national and subnational authorities to implement gender sensitive policies and
strategies, especially for gender-based violence and child marriage.
• SDG indicators: 5.2.1, 5.3.1

• Awareness among communities, public service providers and traditional leaders to foster
demand of rights and use of services through partnerships.
• SDG indicators: 3.8.1, 6.1.1

• Enhanced national capacity to employ human rights based approach when developing and
implementing policies, costed strategies and plans to improve health, WASH, education,
protective services, social protection, nutrition and food security.
• SDG indicators: 6.1.1
Making the Planet SDGs a reality
The UN in BD together with GoB and other are working towards improved
sustainability and increased resilience of the environment :

• Strengthened national policies, legal documents and guidelines on renewable energy,


conservation of forest resources, protection of at-risk areas, addressing environmental
pollution and disaster risk reduction.
• SDG indicators: 7.2.1, 14.5.1, 15.1.1

• Enhanced disaster risk reduction and climate change integration in planning and
implementation tools of national and subnational institutions as well as private sector.
• SDG indicators: 11.B.1, 11.1.1

• Adoption and integration of green policies in the national development plan.

The UN in BD together with GoB and other are working towards increased
opportunities for women and disadvantaged groups to contribute and
benefit from economic progress:

• Improved for decent work for all and skills development programmes, particularly for
vulnerable women, adolescents, youth and marginalized populations.
• SDG Indicator: 8.8.2, 4.3.1

• Harmonized policies for improved governance and ensuring equity of national, urban and
rural social protection programmes.
• SDG Indicator: 8.5.1

• Effective implementation of programmes that are aligned with National Social Security
Strategy.
