(1991): 10-17. Web. 24 Mar. 2009.

In this article, Oriana Baddeley, Dean of Research for the University of the Arts London

and a member of the research centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation, offers an in-depth

biography of Frida Kahlo. She details Kahlo’s haunting and original painting style, her turbulent marriage

to muralist Diego Rivera, her association with communism, and her love of Mexican culture and folklore.

Herrera, Hayden. Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo. 1983. New York. Perennial-Harper, 2002. Print.

Art historian Hayden Herrera’s detailed biography of Frida Kahlo explores her personal life,

career, and vibrant personality within the context of Mexico’s cultural and political atmosphere. The book

frequently draws on Kahlo’s own writing—her diary entries, letters, and poetry—as well as the views of

her friends, relatives, and other contemporaries.

Schaefer, Claudia. Frida Kahlo: A Biography. Westport, Connecticut: Greenwood, 2002. Print.

Professor Claudia Schaefer, Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the

University of Rochester, New York, delves into the life of Frida Kahlo, from its early beginnings in

Coyoacan Mexico to her battle with polio at age six, to a bus accident in which she suffered severe

injuries. Schaefer shows how these experiences, combined with a difficult marriage inspired vibrant

works depicting Frida's experiences with pain as well as the symbolism and spirit of Mexican culture.
