School of Mechatronics & Robotics, Bengal Engineering & Science University Shibpur
The beginning of this century is marked as
interdisciplinary age which has not only
revolutionized Indian and global industrial market
but also has put an impact in engineering education
system. Bengal Engineering & Science University,
Shibpur responded timely by introducing a new
specialized engineering degree course in
mechatronics under the School of Mechatronics &
Robotics.

Mechatronics

Mechatronics is defined as “a synergistic combination of precision mechanical engineering,

electronic control and systems thinking in the design of products and manufacturing
processes”. Synergy is achieved when a number of different agents combine to produce
something of which the total is greater than the sum of the parts. The combination itself gives
rise to a property which does not exist a-priori within anyone of the constituent agencies.
Thus, a mechatronically designed product can meet specifications which were previously
unattainable or even unthinkable. The Mechatronic designer must be a generalist, willing to
seek and apply knowledge from a broad range of sources.

Who is a Mechatronics Engineer?

• Leader in the initiation and integration of design

• Interdisciplinary knowledge of various techniques
• Ability to master the entire design process from concept to manufacturing
• Ability to use the knowledge resources of other people and the particular blend of
technologies which provide the most optimal design solution

The WHY of Mechatronics

In an increasingly competitive and global market, companies need to have the ability to
increase the competitiveness of their products through the use of technology and must be able
to respond rapidly and effectively to changes in the market place. Mechatronic strategies have
been shown to support and enable the development of new products and markets, as well as
through enhancing existing products, while responding to the introduction of new product
lines by a competitor.

The HOW of Mechatronics

The achievement of a successful mechatronics design environment essentially depends on the

ability of the design team to communicate, collaborate, and integrate. Indeed, a major role of
the mechatronics engineer is often that of acting to bridge the communications gaps that can
exist between more specialized colleagues in order to ensure that the objectives of
collaboration and integration are achieved.

M.Tech in Mechatronics

To cater to the changing needs of the industry in the area of mechatronics, quality manpower
should be generated on an urgent basis as there is plenty of pull from industry. Industries
want students trained to integrate electronics, controls, computers, and moving parts. For
them, this is not just where engineering is going. It is where engineering has arrived. The
course is unique with respect to the similar degree program offered by other Indian
universities and is framed accordingly to educate graduate engineers to be an expert of
multidisciplinary areas involving mechanical, electrical, electronics with software
engineering. Excellent placement record through out the globe reveals the demand of our
graduate product. At the same time, it has been realized that true benefits of Mechatronics
cannot reach the common people unless Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics engineer has
sufficient knowledge in it. Survey in present status of design / automation / research sector
along with its future promise and challenges, pressure from research and academic institutes
motivate this School to take a bold step of introducing PG course (M. Tech.) in Mechatronics
in collaboration with three CSIR Laboratories, namely, CEERI Pilani, CSIO Chandigarh and
CMERI Durgapur. This is unique and new initiative for generating trained manpower in the
futuristic multi-disciplinary area of Mechatronics.

The School has been established to offer the followings:

• Introduce full time interdisciplinary Post Graduate programme in mechatronics.
• Take venture of collaboration with the industries.
• Frame sponsored research projects and strengthen research activities.
• Organize workshops, colloquia, seminars and symposia with participation of experts,
academicians, industrialists and administrators working on the field of mechatronics,
robotics and industrial automation.
• Disseminate knowledge in related fields through publication of newsletters, working
papers, and journal for their sharing among scholars and development practitioners.
• Create physical infrastructure to accommodate the facilities and equipments necessary for
conducting its activities.
Key Features

• Unified teaching by a committed team of Professors

and Scientists.
• Strong potential, Tightly coupled, Multiple domain,
Integration in many dimensions
• Hands-on real project emphasis
• Remove subject divisions

This course studies mechatronics at a theoretical and practical level; striking a balance
between theory/analysis and hardware implementation; emphasis is placed on physical
understanding and mathematical formalities. Case-studies, problem-solving approach with
hardware demonstrations, are used throughout the course. The focus is kept on the role of
each areas in the overall design process and how these key areas are integrated into a
successful mechatronic system design. Starting at design and continuing through
manufacture, mechatronic designs optimize the available mix of technologies to produce
quality precision products and systems in a timely manner with features the customer wants.
If winning designs are to be produced in today's environment, it is imperative that electronics
and computer control be included in the design process at the same time the basic functions
and properties are defined. The real benefits to industry of a mechatronic approach to design
are shorter development cycles, lower costs, and increased quality, reliability, and
performance.

Engineers faced with the task of developing mechatronic products must understand the
principles of mechatronic design, which requires multidisciplinary knowledge. Therefore, it
is necessary to develop and teach multi- and inter-disciplinary courses that provide students
with cross-platform skills and expertise to meet the rapidly changing needs of industry.
Towards this end, this post-graduate course has been developed. This course is heavily
laboratory and project oriented.

This course provides the hands-on, teamwork, and communication skills considered
important in curriculum reform. Moreover, it concentrates on educating young engineers to
use existing and emerging technologies to solve practical problems. The course is successful
at generating excitement and enthusiasm among students who their self-confidence rises with
each successful exercise they complete.
