T parked my bicycle on the green lawns of the campus, straightened my tie,
placed my cap carefully over my head, and headed through the giant oak doors
to the library, I had an important paper to write for Professor Rodeen and I
would begin my research this morning before lectures began.
My subject was Science and the future of transportation and I had decided to
examine not only the history of the shipping lines and their future development
(which was familiar to us), but to try to find some information about the recent
experiments and minor successes around flying. Some were saying that one day
in the future, people might fly in aeroplanes and use them as a method of
transportation. I considered this somewhat ridiculous and just a visionary
speculation but was fascinated by the idea.
I began my search with the letter ‘F’ for ‘flying’ by pulling out one long, narrow
box drawer which had from ‘fa’ to ‘fm’ displayed on its front. It slid out of the
wooden chest which held at least 50 other drawers just like it and I began
sorting through the cards using the tips of my fingers. An—here was something.
Flight—the Wright Brothers’ experiments. I would begin by reading this.
The catalogue number was displayed on the card and I began to search the
library shelves for the paper that had been written on the subject. Once found,
T took my seat and began to read-
My ink pen was ready and I had bought a fresh ink bottle and so I began making —
my notes in black ink on my pale, brown paper. I would have to revise them and
write the final paper once all my research was completed and my. conclusions
were drawn.
Weeks later, and my paper completed, I tied the bundle together with a small
ribbon used for the purpose and submitted it, in person, to my professor.
