Alberto Gonzalez Romero Oxidation and reduction

1.Theoretical Framework

Oxidation-reduction reaction, also called redox reaction, any chemical reaction in which

the oxidation number of a participating chemical species changes. Many oxidation-
reduction reactions are as common and familiar as fire, the rusting and dissolution
of metals, the browning of fruit, and respiration and photosynthesis—basic life functions.

This can be sumarized in a reaction in which electrons are transferred from one sunstance
to another, it is calle dan oxidation reduction reaction or redox reaction.

Oxidation the complete or partial loss of electrons

Reduction the complete or partial gain of electrons

Color change chemistry experiments are interesting, visually appealing, and illustrate a
wide range of chemical processes. These chemical reactions are visible examples of
chemical changes in matter.

2.Problem definition
Do a experiment where we can se how and why redox occur

4.Objective
During the experiment observe the changes in elements with a redox reaction

4.Hypothesis
Depending of the characteristics of the metal is the color of the flame

5.Variables
Independent variable: The type of element

Dependent variable: The characteristics of an element

6.Materials
Experiment 1:

Graphite Hydrochloric acid Metals in powder

Experiment 2:

Aluminum foil Copper sulphate .25 M

7.Procedure
being careful with the help of a cuter you have to sharpen a pencil leaving only the part of
the graphite uncovered (like 3 cm) Then dip the graphite into the acid and fill it with some
dust To finish, with the graph and dust you put it in the lighte

Dip aluminum foil into copper sulphate and watch what happens

8.Results
A violet = potassium chloride

B red = calcium chloride

C green = copper chloride

D dark red = lithium chloride

E orange = sodium chloride

The aluminum foil got a small brownish coat

9.Observations

The change of color was on the instant; the color of the flame was very amassing. Also the
aluminum foil in a matter of minutes a layer of “dirt” was created

10. Analysis

We observe during this reactions a process where <toms or ions are oxidized and
reduced, also help us to determine the change of color in each metal according to the
color of flame.

11.Conclusions
I learn that the number of electrons transferred from atoms or ions most equal the number
of electrons accepted, also that the reduction reaction are not limited to atoms of an
element charging to ions or the reverse.
