Q1: Why are the sulfonamides and trimethoprim synergistic?

Does their combination change their action from being
bacteriostatic to bactericidal?
Trimethoprim + sulfonamides combine the antibacterial drug action of trimethoprim and
a sulfonamide. The activity is attributed to their synergistic effect in inhibiting folic acid
metabolism in bacteria. Trimethoprim inhibits the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase.
When used alone, trimethoprim is bacteriostatic, but it is bactericidal when combined
with sulfonamides.

Q2: Why do clinicians nearly always encourage clients to offer a

lot of water when administered sulfonamides?
For best results, sulfa medicines should be taken with a full glass of water, and the patient
should drink several more glasses of water every day. This precaution is necessary because
sulfa drugs do not dissolve in tissue fluids as easily as some other anti-infective medications.
Drinking plenty of water will help prevent some of the medicine's side effects.

Q3: Elaborate the term Triple Sulfas please.

Triple sulfa is a name used for the combination of three sulfaantibiotic drugs -
sulfacetamide, sulfathiazole, and sulfabenzamide. It was once used to treat bacterial
vaginosis (BV) caused by the bacterium Gardnerellavaginalis.Although triple sulfa was once
sold under a number of brand names (including Sultrin), many are no longer available. Triple
sulfa is no longer commonly prescribed for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis because it
was found to be ineffective as a treatment for BV. The medication is used either as a cream
with an applicator or as a tablet suppository. Sulfa antibiotics work by slowing the growth of
bacteria, in this case on the skin surfaces of the vagina.
