The controversy regarding airing of Mahabharat and Ramayana needs to be seen in the
circumstances which caused it to be re-aired, i.e. a means of entertainment during the
lockdown. These programs are something which our parents and elders have grown up with
and hence gives them a sense of reliving their childhood memories in these times of distress,
since this was the only show which used to be aired at that time and had huge popularity.
Moreover, speaking on a personal level, it enables my family to share their childhood shows
with me and I absolutely adore the vigour with which they describe details of these shows to
me. While I don’t think that the show ignites nationalism, it certainly does enable families to
spend quality time together. Therefore, I don’t think that the Marxist criticism holds much
value as no one is being forced to watch these shows and it’s their choice. If one does not
wish to see these shows then the 21st Century certainly, has enabled us with numerous
streaming portals and television channels to keep ourselves entertained.
