Service Provided by Network Layer

• The network layer is responsible for the source-to-destination delivery of a
packet, possibly across multiple networks
• If two systems are connected to the same link, there is usually no need for
a network layer
• Protocols are IP, ARP, RARP,
• Services provided by Network layer are
Internetworking
Logical addressing
Routing
Packetizing

Internetworking
• It provides logical connection between different networks

Logical Addressing
• Addressing is necessary to identify each device on the internet
uniquely
• IP Addresses are used to provide uniqueness at internet level
• IP Address has two versions that are IP v4 and IPv6
• ARP and RARP protocols are used to map IP to MAC and MAC to IP

Routing
• In a network, various routes are available
• Network layer helps to select best route
• Routes are selected at various criteria
• Packets are forwarded at correct interface of router to reach
destination
• Various routing algorithms are used for example Distance Vector
Routing

Routing

Packetizing
• The network layer encapsulates the packets received from upper layer
protocol and makes new packets
• It is done by a network layer protocol called IP
