Message from the Chief Engineer

Aimed to Develop a Vehicle that Exceeds Customer Expectations
In the development of this new model, my first thought was to develop a vehicle that can
provide what it is called in Japanese “WAKUDOKI,” or in other words, a strong surge of
excitement by exceeding customer expectations in any aspect of a vehicle. The
“WAKUDOKI” of this vehicle is achieved by providing equipment not found in competing
vehicles, by offering a level of performance that competing vehicles cannot provide, and by
allowing users to actually feel a higher-than-expected quality. To realize this type of vehicle,
I felt that we needed to develop a C-segment (compact size) hatchback that surpasses
competitors in reliability, quality, safety, fuel efficiency, and sensory performance specifically
in the fiercely-competitive European market. By doing so, the vehicle would gain the
admiration of not only customers in Europe but customers worldwide.
To determine the direction of the development of the new model, we reviewed the
evaluations of the current model and conducted FGI (Focus Group Interview) to survey
users’ views of the current model. We conducted these FGIs on two different occasions so
that we could obtain even more accurate information. What we learned as a result is that in
addition to the younger generation, even empty nesters, who are the main user segment of
the current model, are seeking a sporty image in a C-segment hatchback. The results were
quite surprising, but based on those results, we decided to focus our efforts on developing a
sporty vehicle that evokes up a feeling of excitement.

Developments Focused on Sensory Performance with the Theme of Response

Enhancement
Throughout the development process, I held more product evaluation meetings and study
sessions with our European staff than ever before. Moreover I invited staff participated in the
local evaluations to Japan. We worked together to conduct driving tests in order to achieve a
level of sensory performance that could be accepted in the European market. By repeating
these driving tests, we were able to achieve driving performance that meets to the sensory
demands in Europe. However, we also knew that without driving tests on local roads in
Europe, we couldn’t truly understand its performance. Therefore we shipped a prototype
vehicle to Europe, extensively conducted driving tests on local roads, and repeated the
verification process.
In Europe, there are freeways without speed limits. Thus vehicles destined for Europe must
be able to travel side by side with other vehicles at high speeds. In order to provide drivers
with peace of mind even when driving on these high speed roads, accurate steering
performance and excellent driving stability are an absolute must. On the other hand, in
addition to excellent ride comfort, stable vehicle behavior is required in order to provide a
comfortable driving when travelling on the cobblestone roads in urban areas or when driving
through mountain passes with a continuous stream of tight curves. I also recognized that
European drivers repeat sudden acceleration and deceleration in order to merge into traffic,
so acceleration performance with high level of response is also a critical element. Those
road tests revealed sensory performance issues typical to hybrid models such as driver’s
impression that an increase in speed is not always synchronized with an increase in engine
rpm. Another issue is sensory performance that even with the quiet vehicle interior during
cruising, engine noise becomes noticeable when rapid acceleration.
In order to solve issues and achieve reliability, quality, safety, fuel efficiency, and dynamic
performance including a sensory evaluation demanded in Europe on a higher dimension, we
exchanged opinions with our European staff each time there was a problem and repeatedly
reconfirm the direction of the development. As a result, we were able to further refine
dynamic performance to an advanced level that is suited not only for Europe but for the
entire world.

C__1/13
Development Concept (Dec. 21, 2011)

Pursued a Hatchback that Greatly Exceeds Customers’ Expectations in All Aspects

We aimed to develop a vehicle that greatly exceeds customers’ expectations in all aspects
and significantly change the conventional image of C-segment hatchbacks. To create such a
vehicle, we advanced the development using competing vehicles including the VW Golf,
which holds the largest market share in Europe, as our benchmark. Without using the
limitation of C-segment vehicles or hybrid models as an excuse, we uncompromisingly
advanced the development of a vehicle that exceeds both customer expectations and the
performance of competing vehicles.
Having positioned the hybrid model as the symbol of the lineup, we completed a vehicle that
surpasses competitors in sensory performance such as handling stability, ride comfort, NV
performance, and acceleration feel and ease-of-use of the luggage space etc., not to
mention excellent fuel efficiency and a cutting-edge feel of a hybrid vehicle. Our focus in
dynamic performance included of course areas such as handling stability, ride comfort, NV
performance, and an acceleration feel. By achieving these performances at a higher level, I
think we are able to change customers’ perception of hybrid models at the very moment
users start driving. For the conventional model as well, we meticulously pursued high fuel
efficiency as well as excellent dynamic performance and achieved class-top level
performance.

Pursued “Smart Dynamism” within the Perfect Size

Our aim is to achieve an exterior styling that is sporty and vibrant while maintaining the
perfect size for a C-segment hatchback. Thus we carefully analyzed the design and
aerodynamic characteristic trends of C-segment hatchbacks. This analysis prompted us to
reduce the overall height, which helps achieve a sporty styling that projects a vibrant image.
The reduced height also enhanced aerodynamic performance because of the smaller frontal
projected area and led to excellent fuel efficiency.
We then pursued packaging that provides excellent seating comfort and ample luggage
space within this exterior size. For seating comfort, we repeatedly examined everything from
the head clearance to leg room in order to secure comfortable cabin space. Also, in order to
provide ample luggage space that matches actual usage scenarios, we designed the
luggage space based on the size of suitcases and crates widely used in Europe and then
extended the rear overhang to ensure ample luggage space. In particular, we focused on
securing luggage space for the hybrid model. With the battery installed in the luggage space,
the current models can only provide a limited luggage space. To overcome this in the new
model, we positioned the battery pack under the rear seat and achieved luggage space on
par with the conventional model.
At the same time, we have developed the vehicle design based on the concept of “Smart
Dynamism” which smartly expresses functionality such as cabin space, aerodynamic
performance, and reduced weight, as well as dynamism. As a result, unique and strong
presence clearly expressed in the European market where dynamic hatchback models as
Renault Magane and Opel Astra emerge to compete against static VW Golf. In order to
embody this “Smart Dynamism,” we worked closely with the production department from an
early stage of the development. We strived to achieve front design with engine compartment
positioned lower, high pedestrian protection, and sharp side character lines that ensure
design reproducibility in mass production process. Our effort has been extended to create
rear wheel arch design with minimized gap and flat roof to achieve both aerodynamic
characteristics and ample head clearance. Furthermore, regarding to the rear design, an
important aspect for hatchbacks, we developed a back door-integrated rear spoiler and
round back door shape with a large rear garnish in consideration to aerodynamic
performance and vehicle design with a continuous and unified feel. We worked persistently
on creating abovementioned features up until the very end, focusing on incorporating this
design with aerodynamic characteristics. As a result, our intense efforts realized an exterior
design that fully satisfies customer demands.

Development Concept (Dec. 21, 2011)

Enhancement of the Sense of Quality through In-depth Studies of SQP (Sensory Quality
Prioritization)
For the interior, we advanced the development with particular focus on consistency and
embodiment of genuine quality. From the initial phase of the development, we focused on
working on aspects and components that customers value most and quality enhancement
that boost customer satisfaction. To achieve these objectives, we conducted customer
research called SQP, which is a technique designed to help us determine where to place
priority in the development process. Based on SQP information, we put priority on the area
around the front seat and adopted high quality genuine leather and metallic ornamentation
with hairline accents. Moreover, we used competing vehicles that are highly regarded in
Europe as benchmarks for details from the meter illumination color to the font used on the
various switches. To pursue consistency throughout the cabin, we conducted product
evaluations with European staff up until the final development phase and incorporated their
feedbacks and the latest trends of font size and ornamentation colors and such into the new
model.

The new model was developed with properly reflecting European staff and customers’ points
of view, and as a result, we were able to create a well-balanced sporty C-segment
hatchback in terms of both design and performance. Therefore, I am confident that this new
model far surpasses competing vehicles in every aspect. I would like to ask everyone in our
sales team to gain a full and correct understanding of the advantages of the new model,
convey them to our customers and wish you the very best in successful sales negotiations.

Product Planning Background

Downsizing Trend Gaining Strength
With a rising awareness of environmental conservation in the background, the customer
demand has begun shifting onto highly fuel efficient vehicles. This demand shift has led to a
downsizing trend. Under the influence of this trend, consumer demand is shifting from
C-segment to subcompact class. However, there is also a shift to C-segment from a class
above, and thus the C-segment continues to be an important segment of the European
market.

Pursued a C-Segment Hatchback that Can Success in Europe

The development target was to create the new model as a hatchback that surpasses
competitors in the European market. The reason that the main focus was particularly placed
on the European market is because successfully meeting high standards of the world’s most
competitive European market will lead to worldwide acceptance of the new model. For this
reason, the hybrid model was positioned as the symbol of the lineup, and its cabin comfort
for all occupants and excellent dynamic performance including sensory performance that
surpasses the conventional hybrid vehicle image was significantly enhanced while
maintaining its class leading environmental performance. As for the conventional model,
every aspect of the vehicle, not only fuel efficiency but also dynamic performance, is
redesigned to achieve class-top level performance and attract European customers.

Target Customer: Drivers Seeking a Sporty Vehicle with Excellent Fuel Efficiency
The target customer of the new model includes young singles and couples in their 30’s as
well as empty nesters, which have been the main target customer for the current models.
Young singles and couples in their 30’s are seeking a stylish sporty vehicle with excellent
fuel efficiency and exciting driving experience from the moment the vehicle takes off.
On the other hand, empty nesters also have needs that are similar to those of the younger
generation. More specifically, empty nesters demand hatchback models with youthful styling
and want a vehicle that makes them feel younger. This customer group demand hatchback
models with a sporty youthful image and expect to feel and stay younger when they drive the
vehicle.
For the new model, developments were directed at a “sporty vibrant vehicle,” and every
effort was made to achieve excellent styling, class-top level driving performance, excellent
fuel efficiency, and enhanced quality.

Development Concept (Dec. 21, 2011)

Origin of the Name

The name Auris is derived from the Latin word ”Aurum” which means gold, and “Aura” which
is the English term for a distinctive atmosphere. We decided upon this name as we believe
its youthful image will be positively accepted by the young generation, thus matching the
vehicle concept. We decided to add “is” at the end of the word as to create unity with other
vehicle names including Avensis and Yaris in order to further establish the presence of
TOYOTA.

System and Design

- The system is compromised of a set of pulleys which can continuously change the groove width by
hydraulic pressure, and a steel belt which is connected to these pulleys.
> Pulley ratio is continuously controlled by adjusting the pulley’s groove width using hydraulic
pressure control. This alters the belt contact radius.
- A class-top level pulley ratio width is achieved for enhanced fuel economy and reduced noise.
- A class-top level and highly effective small torque converter is developed to provide both high fuel
economy and good driving response.
- A non-crescent shaped high pressure oil pump is adopted for compactness and reduced drive
torque, while also enhancing the pump’s volume efficiency at low speeds.
- The FEM (Finite Element Method) analysis is applied to the case design. The case design and rib
allocation reduces vibration with a significant reduction in noise levels and weight gain.
- A fluid warmer is adopted to enhance fuel economy by increasing the heating speed of CVT fluid
during engine startup. This allows for a quick reduction in friction loss.

Automatic Pulley Ratio Control

- Pulley ratio control is implemented to make pulley ratio and shift speed suitable based on
information including the accelerator opening degree, vehicle speed, and brake signal. This
realizes comfortable driving in accordance with the driver’s intentions and road conditions.
- Automatic pulley ratio control (“D” range), which controls the CVT to generate maximum fuel
economy and driving performance through integrated control with the engine, is adopted.
> Excellent quietness and fuel economy is realized through lock-up control which activates from
low vehicle speeds to suppress engine revolution as much as possible, in addition to a wide
pulley ratio range.
> By taking the advantage of continuous speed variations of the CVT during deceleration, engine
revolution is maintained higher than the lowest fuel cut engine revolution. As a result, fuel cut
range is expanded into low vehicle speeds, thus achieving high fuel economy.
> A smooth and comfortable driving experience without shift shock is realized through suitable
throttle and pulley ratio characteristics that can fully control the vehicle speed in accordance
with accelerator operations.

Acceleration Control (Linear Feeling Enhancement Control)

- An acceleration feel that matches the driver’s sensitivity is pursued by revising CVT control and by
further enhancing integrated control with the engine.
- A control function during acceleration is implemented to control the drive force and realize a
suitable acceleration feel. The driver’s request for increased speed is determined through changes
in the vehicle speed and accelerator opening degree.
> At the beginning of acceleration, acceleration control optimizes the pulley ratio control speed to
obtain quick response to the driver’s acceleration operation as desired.
> After the above, the control function is tuned to realize smooth and extended acceleration as
engine revolution increases.
> During long acceleration, an upshift control that realizes a shift step feel as an automatic
transmission vehicle is implemented to produce a continuing acceleration feel.

Deceleration Control
- A control function during deceleration is implemented to allow for suitable drive force control. The
vehicle’s deceleration condition is determined through factors including the vehicle speed,
accelerator opening degree, and brake operations.
> The fixation of the pulley ratio maintains high revolution during fuel cut, suppresses fuel
consumption, and help allows for the quick generation of effective engine braking.
> Realized an excellent acceleration response by quickly generating drive force when
reacceleration is detected during deceleration control.
> When in the SPORT mode, Braking shift-down control that generates a higher deceleration by
increasing the engine speed during hard braking is adopted to effectively reduce speed on
winding roads and in circuit driving and such.

Product Detail (Apr. 18, 2012)

7-Speed Sport Multidrive S mode

- A 7-speed sport Multidrive S with manual gear shifting-like characteristics is adopted.
> An “M” position is installed next to the “D” position of the gate format sequential selector lever
to allow for 7-speed manual shifting operations.
- Realized active manual gear shifting-like operations when the selector lever is in the “M” position to
enable the driver to select an arbitrary shift step. Moving the lever forward to “(+)” will allow up shift
operations, while moving the lever backwards to “(-)” will allow for down shift operations.
> An “M” display in the shift indicator, which is positioned inside the combination meter, will
illuminate when the “M” position has been selected. In addition, the currently selected shift step
will be displayed inside the shift position indicator display.
> When in the “M” position, suitable engine brake force can be achieved with each step position.
In addition, the shift step will automatically shift down to “M1” when the vehicle is stopped.
> Even when in the “M” position, the shift step will automatically be shifted up if engine revolution
becomes excessive and shifted down if lacking.
> Even in the D-range, the system temporarily allows for shifting pulley ratio through the paddle
shift switch operation. (Only for models with the paddle shift switch)
- With the aim of enhancing upshift and downshift response and reducing shift shock, a highly
responsive sequential shift control is adopted.
> Ignition timing and electronically controlled throttle are collaboratively controlled.
> Engine torque is meticulously controlled in accordance with ratio and speed.

Uphill/Downhill Shift Control

- Uphill/Downhill shift control that determines an uphill or downhill in accordance with the accelerator
opening degree and vehicle speed, and then selects a suitable pulley ratio for the current situation,
is adopted.
> When judged to be on an uphill, unnecessary upshifts are suppressed to allow for suitable
drive force, and acceleration pedal control is enhanced.
> When braking operations are detected when judged to be on a downhill, a downshift is
automatically implemented to generate suitable engine brake force which contributes to
reducing driver operations.
> The characteristics of are used to full advantage to allow for a controlled continuous pulley
ratio, which in turn realizes suitable drive and engine brake force in all vehicle speed ranges.

Lock-up Control
- Lock-up control which allows for the effective use of the power train is adopted.
> The lock-up control actuation range is expended compared to conventional automatic models,
to realize the combination of fuel economy and driving performance.
> The lock-up control actuates from a low vehicle speed after start off. This allows for a reduction
in engine revolution and enhancement in transmission efficiency.
> The expansion of lock-up range into low vehicle speeds for deceleration, allows for an
expansion in the fuel cut range, which significantly contributes to enhanced fuel economy.
> The lock-up control directly transmits the changes in engine output due to accelerator pedal
operations into drive force to enhance driving performance.
