Enhancement of the Sense of Quality through In-depth Studies of SQP (Sensory Quality
Prioritization)
For the interior, we advanced the development with particular focus on consistency and
embodiment of genuine quality. From the initial phase of the development, we focused on
working on aspects and components that customers value most and quality enhancement
that boost customer satisfaction. To achieve these objectives, we conducted customer
research called SQP, which is a technique designed to help us determine where to place
priority in the development process. Based on SQP information, we put priority on the area
around the front seat and adopted high quality genuine leather and metallic ornamentation
with hairline accents. Moreover, we used competing vehicles that are highly regarded in
Europe as benchmarks for details from the meter illumination color to the font used on the
various switches. To pursue consistency throughout the cabin, we conducted product
evaluations with European staff up until the final development phase and incorporated their
feedbacks and the latest trends of font size and ornamentation colors and such into the new
model.
The new model was developed with properly reflecting European staff and customers’ points
of view, and as a result, we were able to create a well-balanced sporty C-segment
hatchback in terms of both design and performance. Therefore, I am confident that this new
model far surpasses competing vehicles in every aspect. I would like to ask everyone in our
sales team to gain a full and correct understanding of the advantages of the new model,
convey them to our customers and wish you the very best in successful sales negotiations.

Target Customer: Drivers Seeking a Sporty Vehicle with Excellent Fuel Efficiency
The target customer of the new model includes young singles and couples in their 30’s as
well as empty nesters, which have been the main target customer for the current models.
Young singles and couples in their 30’s are seeking a stylish sporty vehicle with excellent
fuel efficiency and exciting driving experience from the moment the vehicle takes off.
On the other hand, empty nesters also have needs that are similar to those of the younger
generation. More specifically, empty nesters demand hatchback models with youthful styling
and want a vehicle that makes them feel younger. This customer group demand hatchback
models with a sporty youthful image and expect to feel and stay younger when they drive the
vehicle.
For the new model, developments were directed at a “sporty vibrant vehicle,” and every
effort was made to achieve excellent styling, class-top level driving performance, excellent
fuel efficiency, and enhanced quality.

Product Concept: Creating “Emotional Value + Environmental Value”
The new model is designed to be a vehicle that provides pleasure and stimulates the
innermost emotions the moment users see and start driving the vehicle. In order to create
such a vehicle, every aspect of the new model, including environmental performance, driving
performance, overall vehicle quality, and ease of use, was thoroughly enhanced to set a new
standard for C-segment vehicles. To form the basis of these enhancements, crating
“Emotional value + environmental value” was set as the fundamental product concept.
Based on this concept and with the key phrase of “Create E value,” the 4 “E”s including
“Emotional,” “Environment,” “Efficient Package,” and “Excellent Value for the Money” were
pursued.
In addition to the abovementioned four selling points, this new model is equipped with more
safety equipment and appealing cutting-edge features such as a Hill Start Assist system and a
Parking Assist system.

- The 1ZR-FAE engine, a 1.6L in-line 4-cylinder engine with VALVEMATIC, is adopted.
- VALVEMATIC that realizes a continuously variable valve lift and variable valve timing mechanism
during the opening and closing of the intake valve is adopted.
- The optimization of the valve lift amount and opening/closing timing realize the reduction of
pumping loss during light loads and optimization of valve timing control in all driving ranges to
realize the combination of the significant enhancement of fuel efficiency and output.
Engine Specification
Engine type 1ZR-FAE
2. Drive Train
1. CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)
Excellent fuel efficiency and dynamic performance have been achieved by adopting a 7-speed Multidrive S
CVT, and a smooth driving feeling is realized with a transmission that features stepless control.
FEATURES
K311
- The K311 is available for 1ZR-FAE engine models.
> A steel belt-type continuously variable transmission with a torque converter controlled by a fully
electronic hydraulic pressure control.
> Class-top level fuel economy is achieved.
> A smooth drive feeling is realized.
> The K311 allows for driving as the driver intends.
> Class-top level quietness is achieved.

Controls
- A high pressure hydraulic control circuit is adopted.
> An exclusive linear solenoid is added for the line pressure control unit to enhance line pressure
control flexibility, and to achieve line pressure control with suitable pressure.
> A belt clamp pressure control unit is adopted to suitably control necessary belt clamping
pressure using secondary pulley hydraulic pressure for transmitting torque.
> A pulley ratio control unit is adopted for an enhanced level of flexibility in pulley ratio control.
This unit achieves suitable pulley ratio control ratios and speeds that accommodate with the
driver’s intentions by fully controlling all of the primary pulley’s oil intake and outtake
electronically.

Vehicle speed
.
- Along with “D” range which achieves both excellent drivability and high fuel economy, SPORT
mode which is suitable for sporty driving, is adopted.
- The following types of controls are implemented for CVT in SPORT mode.
> The pulley ratio range is limited to lower range to generate suitable engine brake force and
realize an excellent response.
> Suitable engine brake force is generated by downshifts in accordance with braking force when
the brake pedal is depressed.
> When the acceleration pedal is not depressed, a high engine speed is maintained to prepare
for reacceleration.
Vehicle speed
.
Deceleration Control
- A control function during deceleration is implemented to allow for suitable drive force control. The
vehicle’s deceleration condition is determined through factors including the vehicle speed,
accelerator opening degree, and brake operations.
> The fixation of the pulley ratio maintains high revolution during fuel cut, suppresses fuel
consumption, and help allows for the quick generation of effective engine braking.
> Realized an excellent acceleration response by quickly generating drive force when
reacceleration is detected during deceleration control.
> When in the SPORT mode, Braking shift-down control that generates a higher deceleration by
increasing the engine speed during hard braking is adopted to effectively reduce speed on
winding roads and in circuit driving and such.
Lock-up Control
- Lock-up control which allows for the effective use of the power train is adopted.
> The lock-up control actuation range is expended compared to conventional automatic models,
to realize the combination of fuel economy and driving performance.
> The lock-up control actuates from a low vehicle speed after start off. This allows for a reduction
in engine revolution and enhancement in transmission efficiency.
> The expansion of lock-up range into low vehicle speeds for deceleration, allows for an
expansion in the fuel cut range, which significantly contributes to enhanced fuel economy.
> The lock-up control directly transmits the changes in engine output due to accelerator pedal
operations into drive force to enhance driving performance.
