The cantilevered axle shown in Figure 1 is made of 2014-T4 aluminum alloy with a yield strength
of Sy = 290 MPa. Use a design factor of safety N = 4 as a reference. The bending load is F = 1,7
kN, the axial tensile load is P = 9,0 kN, and the torsion is T = 70 N·m, as illustrated in Figure 1
of the handout. (You may use the handout as a reference.)

Now you are asked to consider the case with the same loading conditions, and to design a
stock-sized solid cylinder, as illustrated in Figure 1, to meet the prescribed design requirements.
You can use the stock size from the Table A2-1: Preferred Basic Sizes that I attached to this
quiz. Employ the failure design and compare the stock size in your design.

Figura 1: Design of a shaft using a solid cylinder, instead of a mechanical tubing

1. (2.5 %) What is the required stock size of the cylinder?

2. (1 %) What is the actual factor of safety of your design?

3. (1.5 %) Calculate and compare the total material (e.g., mass) used in this design, as opposed
to the total material of the tubular design used in the handout. Which design uses more
material, and thus cost more? You need the handout on the tubular axle design to answer
this question.
