Describe some of your experiences of growing up and say how they have affected

you or would affect bringing up your own children

When I was ten years old, my parents suggested my brother and I go to a summer camp
for children. It was a long time ago, but I remember it vividly. It was going to be the
first time that I attended a summer camp and I wasn’t excited about being there part of
my summer holidays. However, when it finished, I regretted not having gone there
before.

That summer camp was organized by the government of Cantabria. It lasted a fortnight
and was held in Potes. The children aged up to the age of twelve years were divided in
small groups of six, depending on their age and sex. In no time, the members of each
group became close friends, as not only did we play together, but we also ate, slept and
spent most of the time all together. Moreover, several activities were organized in which
each group had to compete with other groups. The activity that all of us most enjoyed
was a two day trekking. Only the children aged ten upwards were allowed to do it, as
we had to walk for long hours. In addition, there was also a day called parents’ day,
which brings me back a lot of memories. It was undoubtedly a memorable day because
every child could explain his parents what he had been doing for these days.

There can be no doubt that it should be a compelling experience in everybody’s

childhood in order to children have a realistic chance of living without their parents or
other relatives some days. Thanks to that experience, I learnt that I was able to live
without my parents and tackle problems single-handed. I had a good opportunity of
thinking for myself too. Furthermore, from my point of view, children develop a
number of personal qualities such as being single-minded, self-confident and mature,
and some skills like interpersonal, problem-solving and social skills, living an adventure
like this. The last point I’d like to make is that apart from learning all these things, I had
great fun there and met five likeable friends, with who I keep in touch. Consequently,
when I have my own children, I’ll recommend them go to a summer camp every
summer as soon as they can.
