Leading

Good leaders, not born, but they are mad. If you have the motivation and the will power, you
can become an effective leader. Good leaders evolve in an endless self-study, schooling, training and
experience cycle. (jago ,1982). A person who fits and leads in the position of the company Is call leader.
Leadership Definition is a mechanism through which an individual control other to accomplish a goal and
guides the group in a manner that makes it more unified and consistent. Other than that, The U.S.
military has studied leadership in depth. One of their meanings is a mechanism by how one person
influences another in order to achieve a goal (U.S. Army, 1983). In order to become a leader, one must
be deeply committed to the goal he or she will achieve. An excellent manager can get their workers
inspired to increase production.

An effective leadership style is important in this global modest environment to reduce the
erosion rate. Only effective leadership styles can achieve organizational objectives. According to (r6)
Leadership refers to the actions of a leader when he directs, motivates, guides and manages a group of
persons. (Hsiung Fang et al) Identified that leadership style can have a positive impact on organizational
commitment and employee satisfaction and internal role satisfaction will have a positive effect on
organizational engagement and role performance. (Podsakoff et al) said that leadership actions can
impact employee confidence and satisfaction in organizational and organizational citizenship behaviors
and further directly strengthens the relationship between leadership style and organizational
commitment.

Moreover, based on (r3) there are 12 approximately common leadership style that can be used
to manage the company. These types of leadership style are authoritarian Leadership (Autocratic),
Participative Leadership (Democratic), Delegative Leadership (Laissez-Faire), The Transformational
Leadership, The Transactional Leadership, Situational Leadership, Bureaucratic leadership, Charismatic
leadership, servant leadership, coaching leadership, cross-cultural leadership, visionary leadership.
These styles of leadership depend on what the leader wants to use, and how the company works. Not all
of these styles should find suitable in the organization for all sorts of circumstances.

Based on the interview with the Branch Manager of Gas Malaysia Berhad, Miss. Suraya, we asked her
which leadership style that closest to the company? and She said that “I personally do not see any one
to be the dominant style employed by the company’s leadership. It all depends on circumstances”. In
this company, if there are situations that require quick answers or results, the manager will make
decisions. But if situations do not force her to make a decision on her own, she will discuss it wither co-
worker in the department. This is one of the ways in which the leader evaluates and monitors his
workers by listening to their ideas. Good leaders will have a tendency to obey diverse employee
opinions and not to make independent decisions. In this environment, therefore, group members will be
more secure under making decisions and will do well in their work. (Marcus,2010)

Miss Suraya then also said she is going to practice autocratic style in a very chaotic situation. For
example, when the organization goes into crisis or when there are serious issues or challenges, decision-
making will be specifically a matter for her, she would not give her employees power to make decisions.
Besides, there is no compromise with the subordinate in this situation. When dealing with a lot of tasks,
managers have to delegate the task to subordinate. Delegation is any duty or authority given from one
person to another to accomplish specific tasks. Normally, the delegation comes from manager to his or
her subordinate ( book ). Miss Suraya is very strict about time management and she do not like her
employees to procrastinate work.

Next question that we asked to Miss Suraya, how do you motivate your employees? The answer
is she motivate through regular coaching, pairing new staff with experienced staff and organizing a
thematic training. “I believe making a staff competent or having more knowledge about his or her
function is a form of motivation. The role of manager in the workplace is definitely the most important
in terms of impact on organizational performance (r7). Motivation is needed to get employees to work.
In addition, the company also gives an employee a reward for appreciation, such as a bonus or a
commission. Employee will take this as a competition and do a better job of receiving it. Therefore, the
employer would like to congratulate and show some respect to the employee if they have done a job
that is so successful that the employee is happy and satisfied with their work. Often people just want
some praise, because some of them have spent a lot of time focusing on their job or mission(r8).

Furthermore, the company also hold out a picnic, annual dinner, family day or a small vacation
for the employee to motivate them more and keep their bond closer. The better the employees know
each other, the easier for them to ask each other the right questions, give reasonable feedback and
eventually streamline certain processes(r9). The more cooperation the organization will show, the more
productive the business will be, and this is the best way for them to relieve anxiety after a stressful job,
since being in a working environment is natural to experience stress, but overstress will interfere with
people's morale and efficiency, impact their physical and emotional wellbeing, and harm their
relationships and home life. It can even determine the success or failure of the job, so that, by providing
this, the employee will not have that kind of problems. (r10).

When you get a group of people together, there's likely to be tension at some point. That
includes the people you deal with. People will disagree with each other, or find fault in each other.
Passive jabs or screaming fights can happen (r4). Next, we asked Miss Suraya regarding the conflict that
she may face in the company. She answered that the frequent conflict would be when an employee or a
few employees question a management’s decision or instruction ignoring the fact that the decision or
instruction is made to serve the company interest, not to serve a certain quarter or an individual.
Contact your feudal staff, support and time to meet alone or with your supervision, is the only way to
resolve disputes. (r11). No distractions there should be enough time for talking. Make sure every person
is given the chance to say what they want. Neither manager or the other employee concerned will
interrupt them. The communication should not be dominated by one person, too. Both should be given
the same time to speak.

The other question that we asked is what is Miss Suraya tips to ensure that the employees
follow the order or procedure. She told that regular monitoring of work progress is the tips. According to
(r5), it's up to HR to learn how to get people to follow policies while knowing that people want their
work free to breathe their throats. For some, it can always be a challenge to obey policies and
procedures, but it must be achieved. She also said that there are 4 ways to ensure employee compliance
which is write down the procedures, help workers understand why procedure is required, make
employees easily link the procedures and award workers who follow policies.

To conclude, good leadership is a very important aspect for management since it is the secret to
the company's performance. A person who is unable to pass on a good leadership ability can trigger a
success loss for the management. Although there are many styles of leadership style that have been
used, they have ultimately led to the same results that give the company a good result and maintain
management continuity. Gas Malaysia Berhad, the organization that was interviewed, implements
different leadership models based on circumstance. This company has good leadership and it have a
great leader
