Project title: Moral Degradation and Human Misery in Mathew Arnold’s “The Scholar Gypsy”
and “Dover Beach”

Problem statement:

This qualitative study wil be designed check the impact & ultimate result of moral
degradation on human misery during the victorian era(1832-1901). Morality, the most important
factor, which determines a person's true identity in the society, gets lost from the victorians &
invites their misery. I have studied all the existing works(not addressed adequately), done by
other researchers on this field & I never found out the exact answer that I am about to conduct.
These are the researches that have been already conducted below:

Neetu Sethi-("Dover Beach": A faithful and spiritual belief by Matthew Arnold).

Mr. More D. A. (Arnold's "Dover Beach": A Criticism of Human Life).

Cook & Peter- Scholarship & Integrity: Mathew Arnold's "The Scholar Gypsy"

Nawanrawat: "The Scholar Gypsy" As a Pastoral Elegy

So, What is missing from the past studies is a comprehensive, structured & scientific approach-
"why the victorians get involved in immoral deeds & & causes the utmost sufferings?", "How &
on what basis moral degradation(independent variable) causes human misery(dependent
variable)?".

No one has shown yet combindly how these two poems are complimentary to each other &
resultant human misery, as the poet has discovered. So, this particular significant part is still
necessary in this field. Therefore, I feel an urgent need to fill it up. The result of this study will
be very helpful for the next researchers & it may give an appropriate shape to this field, I hope.
