It provides basic listening comprehension activities plus simple practice oxercicos for reading and writing these letters in a fun and meaningful format. The ABC Workbook can be used either independently or as an integrated supple- ment to the regular Tiny Talk course. COURSE DESCRIPTION Tiny Talk is a three-level course designed for preschool and kindergarten children The goal of this series is lu lielp young children build strong listening and speaking skills in English by having them interact with warm, lovable characters in everyday reall situations, The three levels are each divided into Aand B sections. Each of these six ‘sections includes a Student Book, a Workbook, Picture Cards, Wall Charts, and a Cassette. Each Teacher's Book combines instructions for hath the A and B sections. Puppets of the four main characters are also available. By coordinating the use of all these components, the teacher can enable ‘students to understand and practice a wide variety of basic English patterns. The Tiny Talk Songbook features the words and music to all sixty songs written especially for this series by Carolyn Graham, TINY TALK ABC WORKBOOK The Tiny Talk ABC Workbook, which is used in conjunction with Tiny Talk Student Book 3A and Student Book 3B, provides young learners with a simple introduction to the alphabet and basic phonics. @ mereton It introduces new vocabulary using all twenty-six letters and thair sounds, and recycles many words already learned in the regular Tiny Talk Student Books. Very young students will enjoy earning the alphabet through words and pictures that are pertinent and interesting to their age group. A variety of fun, age-appropriate activities reintorces the letters and their sounds, and gives students simple practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Timing Letters should be introduced one or two at a time at the beginnina or end of each class meeting. Approximately 10-15 minutes are required to teach each letter thoroughly. TOUR OF A UNIT The Tiny Talk ABC Workbook consists of twenty-six regular units plus two reviow units (one halfway through the book and one at the end). Each regular unit presents a sin- gle letter of the alphabet in a two-page spread, Every regular unit follows the same lesson progression in five stages. Each stage is clearly cued by simple icons for both teacher and student reference. Gl Letter and Sound Introduction The top left corner of the left-hand page introduces the upper- and lowercase forms of the target letter in a large, easy-to-recognize format. ne top right corner contains an amusing scene depicting one of the principal Tiny Talk characters — the toy bears Benny and Sue — having fun while interacting with two other characters or items that model the target letter. For example, in the second unit (B 'b) Sue is shown about ‘ hand a balloon to a smiling baby,The two model items are then isolated and enlarged in the middle section of the page (or adcitional sight and sound tecognition. Many of these words will be recycled in subsequent phonies activities. The corresponding section on the ABC Workbook Cassette provides additional support for introducing and reviewing the names and sounds cf both the target letters ang the made! words using these letters. Bi Letter Formation Practice The bottom third of the page provides a simple tracing and writing activity. It not only shows the correct stroke order for writing both the upper- and lowercase forms of the target letter, but also provides clear tracing ‘emplates’ over which students can begin to form the letters before proceeding to write them completely on their own. Letter-Reinforcement Activity The top haif of the right-hand page features aletter-reinforcement activity that varies in format from unit to unit For example, in one unit students might find and circle letters hiddon in a ecene; in another they might navigate a simple maze to reach an item that contains the target letter for that unit Other activities include coloring vocabulary items that fealure target letters, matching pictures to corresponding letters, or finding and circling target letters within a jumble of other letters. 1 phonies Practice A phonics activity appearing just below the middie of the page maintains the same format throughout the book The teacher either plays the three words for this section on the ABC Workbook Casseite oF reads them aloud from the tapescript on pages 4-7. They must circle the pictures of the cookie and the cat in their books, but not that of the gi. Bi chant The unit concludes with a fun and interactive chant that appears in rebus form at the bottom of the page. The chant provides cumulative review and reinforcement for all the letters leamed by students to date. The teacher can either play the ABC Workbook Cassette to lead the chant, or direct the chant personally by referring to the tapescript on pages 4~7 ABC WORKBOOK CASSETTE ‘The ABC Workbook Cassette features the letter names, their basic sounds, and the simple words used to present these sounds. It also includes the phonics and chant activities for each unit Available in either American or British English versions, the Cassette clearly and directly models native-speaker pronunciation and intonation.
