Module 1: Features of Interactive Schematics

Schematics Search Features

THIS COURSE UTILIZES THE SCHEMATICS FOR THE 2019 INTERNATIONAL® HV SERIES.

For up-to-date information, please see the Information tab in the navigation pane on the left side of the
display. New features will be listed in this section.

The Back button will allow you to go back to the previous schematic.

The Search feature can be used to find any item within the Interactive Schematics application.

To perform a search, navigate to the Search field located at the bottom of the navigation pane.

In this example, the word Headlights is entered into the Search field, and then the Enter key is pressed.

The Search results display all schematics regarding Headlights in the navigation pane under Electrical
Systems.

Under Electrical Systems, the folders can be expanded by clicking on the plus button to navigate to the
corresponding headlight type for the application.

Selecting the schematic displays it in the window on the right.

To perform another search, verify the Search field is cleared by deleting the text and pressing Enter or
by clicking on the 'X'.

In this second example, the phrase Body Control Module is typed into the Search field, and then the
Enter key is pressed.

Clicking on the plus button or folder name opens additional dropdowns so the corresponding schematic
can be found.

Schematic Features
When clicking on certain features of a schematic, an information pop-up box opens and may contain any
or all of the following: Links, Connector Views, 2D Location Views, or Attributes.

Links provide other schematics for the selected device. It is helpful when looking for a power or ground
circuit.

Connector Views provide an end view of the selected connector; typically showing the backside or wire
insertion view of the connector.

2D Location Views provide an illustration of the device and its location in the vehicle.

Attributes provide more information about the device, such as part numbers and descriptions.

For example, in this 2D location view for Cab Ground Studs, clicking on the ground symbol brings up the
option to select a 2D illustration of the ground location.

When a schematic link is clicked, it opens in a split window, allowing for the 2D location view and
schematic to be shown at the same time.

The selected item is highlighted in red on both the schematic and the callout in the 2D location view,
identifying the ground location.

Typing the letter Z on the keyboard will perform a quick zoom on the selected item.

6 Navigating Interactive Schematics ● Study Guide

When navigating the 2D location view, using the zoom bar at the bottom right corner will allow for a
closeup view of the schematic or 2D illustration.

The first item is used to set the desired zoom percentage. This will be saved for future use.

The second item is Zoom to fit. This is used to make the entire image fit the window.

The third item will adjust the zoom percentage of the 2D illustration. This is done by either utilizing the
zoom percentage slide bar or using the minus and plus buttons to the right.

Some electrical systems may spread across multiple schematics. If so, a Schematics button, located at
the top left of the viewing window will appear.

The Schematics button will only be available when there are multiple schematic combinations.

Clicking on each of the schematics will open them in the viewing window. Only one schematic can be
viewed at a time.

Module 2: Navigating Interactive Schematics

Schematic Layout Overview
Each schematic in the Interactive Schematics application may provide the following features: Devices,
Connectors, Inline Connectors, Wires, and Splices.

In this next example, the schematic being shown is the A26 - Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning
(HVAC) Auto Temp Control.

When viewing a schematic, the large orange boxes represent main devices, the yellow boxes attached to
the large orange boxes represent connectors, the combined purple and orange boxes represent inline
connectors, and splices will appear green.

Clicking on the colored boxes will open an information pop-up box showing any of the following: Links,
Connector Views, 2D Location Views, or Attributes.

The power wires on a schematic flow upward.

The ground wires on a schematic flow downward.

CAN Layout

The Controller Area Network, or CAN, schematic can be located in two ways.

In this example, the schematic for Power Windows 4-door not with remote keyless entry, will be used.
On the Door Pods, the pin description on the Body Control Module, or BCM, identifies that the system
communicates over Low Speed J1939.

The first way to find the correct CAN layout is selecting a main device that has a J1939 connection.

For example, selecting the Low Speed J1939 link on the Body Control Module, will open an information
pop-up box.

Each CAN layout will be listed and is engine-specific.

After the vehicle engine type is determined, each engine type will be listed under Links. For example,
the CAN layout for A26 – Low Speed J1939 schematic is selected from the list of A26 link options.

The correct CAN layout will appear in the window when the A26 – Low Speed J1939 schematic is
selected.

The second preferred way to find the correct CAN layout is to first determine the CAN system that the
modules communicate on.

Verify the Search field has been cleared so the menu returns to its original state.

In this example, the Low Speed J1939 has already been determined. After navigating to the menu on the
left, under Electrical Systems, CAN Systems is selected.

After selecting A26 CAN Systems, then the A26 - Low Speed J1939 option; the A26 - Low Speed J1939
schematic opens.

Module 3: Tracing Interactive Schematics

Feature Schematic to Ground Source
This next topic will show how to trace a schematic from a feature schematic, to its Ground source.

In this example, the schematic Power Windows four-door not with remote keyless entry, will be used.

Clicking on any of the ground wires will open an information pop-up box.

Selecting the option that includes Ground in the title or description will open the appropriate schematic.

Under Links, select the Interior Dual Post Ground Stud-Cowl Wall.

The ground schematic will open. Zoom into the ground and follow the wire back through the splice,
shown as BS12; to the ground stud. This is the ground path.

Feature Schematic to Power Source

This next topic will show how to trace a schematic from a feature schematic, to its Power source.

In this example, the schematic Power Windows four-door not with remote keyless entry, will be used.

Clicking on any of the Power wires will open an information pop-up box. Selecting the option that
includes Power in the title or description opens the appropriate schematic.

Select Battery Fuse Block: Diagram 1. The schematic for Battery Feed Power Distribution, otherwise
known as PDM to Cab, will open.

The Power wire will be shown in red. Follow it back through the fuse, to Splice DS50, to Splice DS15, and
then to the battery feed stud 1002. This is the path for the Power source.

Power Source to Feature Schematic

This next topic will show how to trace a schematic from the Power source, back to the feature
schematic.

In this example, the schematic for the Battery Fuse Block will be used; found under Power Distribution,
Interior PDM (Fuse Panel) – Battery Feed.

The wire name will be shown on the right side of the fuse.

Zoom in on the wiring schematic to wire A78E Fuse 1018 - 22 to open the Feature schematic. This fuse is
for the Heated Windshield.

Under Links, clicking on Heated Windshield: Diagram 1 opens the windshield schematic.

Wire A78E is highlighted in red and provides power to the Heated Windshield Relay number 2, through
connector 1014 pin R1-30.

Ground Source to Feature Schematic

This next topic will show how to trace a schematic from the Ground source, back to the feature
schematic.

In this example, the schematic for the Interior Dual Post Ground Stud-Cowl Wall will be used; found
under Ground Distribution, Cab Ground.

The cab ground is being grounded to the vehicle at connector 1004.

Wires coming out of splice BS8 are all the possible features that can be attached to splice BS8.

Navigate to each wire to find the feature schematic that is needed.

Clicking on the wire A78-GB will open the Heated Windshield schematic.

Wire A78-GB provides ground to the Windshield Heater through connector 3005 pin A.
