5 Lightweight 5.1 Steel Weight - Wiki - Aalto.fi PDF
Our calculation sheet is shown in the appendix 1 Area mass.
Figure 5.1: Double Bottom
In that way we can have total mass of one section when multiplied area mass with the whole
section area. Decks and sides are calculated separately and we got that our total mass is
8715 ton. In the Ship Conceptual Design course the total steel weight estimation was 12557
ton. The SCDestimate was done separately for the hull and superstructure sections. The hull
steel weight was estimated with Schneekluth method and the superstructure steel weight the
MüllerKöster method. The Schneekluth gave considerably larger weight for the hull but the
MüllerKöster gave exactly the same weight for the superstructure. The both methods used in
SCDcourse were parametric methods.
Table 5.1. Steel weight comparison between concept design phase and the area mass calculation.
TOTAL 14464
GM 3,29 m
NAPA GM 3,47 m
Difference 0,18 m
The results do not differ too much and give reasonable results. The GM should not be
negative or zero otherwise the ship would not have righting moment opposing the external
moments. Having more than 3 meters of metacentric height indicates a highly stable ship
however too high GM might occur fast accelerations especially on the top decks. This is not
pleasant for the crew or the passengers.
Valerian Albanov is a multipurpose supply vessel so the ship mission might change during
lifetime. Ship mission has very much affect to the total weight of the ship and weight
distribution. During lifetime ships tend to add weight slowly. That’s why our GM and COG
might change and vary during the lifetime. That has to be taken into account. Easiest way to
do that, is to leave some reserve for both of those which Valerian Albanov has.
6.2 CZ-Curve
Positive GM enables the having the righting moment counterbalancing the external heeling
moment. The GZcurve describes the righting lever of the counterbalancing moment.
Maximum value of the curve is the point that describes the maximum external heeling
moment ship can resist.
GZCurve is taken from NAPA with two load cases, with lightweight when all tanks are empty
and with half condition when all tanks are half full. GZCurves are shown in figures 6.1 and
6.2
In Appendix 2 is shown with all loading conditions that SOLAS rules are fulfilled.
