THE SPELLING CAREER

RATIONALE: The students can have fun during this activity while they practice how
words are formed and pronounced.

AIM: To practice the speaking skill while practicing vocabulary words that have been
learnt during a specific period of time or topic.

SUB- AIM: Students can practice the four skills and some of its subskills. Especially
some speaking sub skills such as fluency, accuracy, abstract, listening for detail,
cohesion and coherence while doing this activity.

LEVEL: B1

PROCEDURE:
1. Students need to be divided in teams. They need to be equal teams in order
for it to be fair. Depending on the group of students, the number of members
each team needs to have.
2. Each team needs to be arranged in lines. The teacher will give a student to
each team for him to be the listener and the writer.
3. The teacher will ask the first member of each team to spell a word given by
the teacher. The student that is monitoring each team needs to write down on
a paper what the speller tells him.
4. When the student is done writing, he needs to run as fast as he can and paste
the paper on the board. The teacher starts modeling the activity for them to be
easier.
5. When the teacher finishes giving words, she will check each team's papers
and give feedback for students to correct it.
6. Students will be divided in pairs and will have a free topic conversation
including the vocabulary words that were practiced.
7. The teacher will take notes and give feedback.

ADVANTAGES: Teamwork, fun. The activity can be adapted to any level depending
on the words that are used. Students practice memorisation. Sub skills such as
fluency, accuracy, abstract, listening for detail, cohesion, coherence. The four skills
can be practiced.

DISADVANTAGES: Some students can get stuck during the spelling career,
students can forget the meaning of some of the words, pronunciation may be
forgotten.
STUDENTS ROLE: To work as a team, writers, spellers, cooperation, they produce,
listeners, speakers.

TEACHERS ROLE: Facilitator, monitor. She can solve doubts and maintain order.
She gives corrections. Gives feedback, models. Time keeper.

FEEDBACK: The teacher will give feedback about the spelling on each paper.
Takes notes about some grammar mistakes she hears during the conversation.

POETRY SCAVENGER HUNT

RATIONALE: This activity encourages students to see the poetry in the everyday
language around them, while helpfully reinforcing their understanding of the genre
and practice the writing skill.
AIM: This activity challenges our students to read new meanings into familiar things
and to put their own spin on the language they encounter in the world around them,
all while reinforcing the student’s comprehension about the poetic genre.
SUB-AIM: Students are able to practice the four skills (reading, writing, listening and
speaking) and some subskills of them such as note-taking, editing, listening for
detail, skimming, summarizing, inferring mood and deducing meaning from context.
LEVEL: B2

PROCEDURE:

1. The teacher will ask the students to ‘scavenge’ their school, home, and
outside community for snippets of language they can compile into a piece of
poetry or a poetic collage.
2. Students may copy down or photograph words, phrases, and sentences from
signs, magazines, leaflets or even snippets of conversations they overhear.
3. Once students have gathered their language together, they will work in small
teams in order to build a poem out of the scraps, choosing a central theme to
give the piece cohesion.
4. Once they are done, they will come to the front and share their poem to the
class.

TEACHER’S ROLE: Give feedback, correct grammar mistakes, encourage them,


monitor, model, time keeper.
STUDENT’S ROLE: Work with each other. Look up for words and phrases. They
have to be engaged in the activity. Cooperation, speakers, listeners, readers, writers.
They need to be creative and design their poem.
ADVANTAGES: This activity allows the students to pay more attention to their
environment, to practice the four skills and to check new vocabulary words. It fosters
their creativity. Teamwork. Cohesion and coherence can be practiced such as note-
taking, editing, listening for detail, skimming, summarizing, inferring mood and
deducing meaning from context.
DISADVANTAGES: Some students may spell some words incorrectly if they decide
to write what they listen to. It is possible that they count with limited material. Some
of them might take more time than the others arranging their poem. Some poems
may not be completely coherent or cohesive.
FEEDBACK: After each presentation, the teacher will correct grammar, wrong
collocation words that she writes down or mistakes that students made.
