ADJECTIVES

Rationale: This speaking activity encourages and motivates lower level learners
that find it especially difficult to speak spontaneously, this activity incorporates
“thinking time” during which learners can prepare for speaking by planning what
they are going to say, as it is designed to be done in pairs or small groups.

Main aim: Practicing adjectives seen before or to introduce new ones. Students
personalize the discussion by talking about experiences and feelings. And by this
they practice past tenses, (past simple, past continuous).

Sub-aim: fluency practice, grammar (past simple, past continuous)., new lexis,
they also practice their listening skills by listening to their peers

Subs-skills: pair talk, note-taking, brainstorming, turn-taking, exchange of


information.

Level: A2

Procedure:

 Write a selection of adjectives relating to feelings on the board. (Afraid,


Happy, Sad, Fatigued, etc)

 Teacher models first the activity so they have a clear idea of what to do

 Tell students to choose several adjectives (increase or decrease the number


depending on how long you want the activity to take). Tell them to think of a
time when they felt this way, and that they are going to tell their partner /
small group about their experience.

 Give students time to plan what they are going to say. They can make notes
and ask for vocabulary if they want to.

 Students tell their stories according on the adjective selected


 Feedback to the class.

Teacher´s Role: Monitor, model, facilitator, guide

Student´s role: interaction with peers, listen to peers, ask for any doubts to the
teacher,

Advantages:

 Students will know more about their classmates


 Great for beginners
 Motivates shy students to participate in pairs or small groups
 Can be adapted for higher levels by adding higher level adjectives

Disadvantages:

 If it’s a large group the teacher might not be able to hear every group or
pairs. To give feedback
 It can be too easy if adapted to higher levels
 Not everyone likes to talk about their personal life.
