INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES: This paper has 2 pages and 3 questions. This examinatior is worth 12.5 % of the final course mark. ‘The paper will be marked as 50 Marks and then pro-rated, Answer ANY TWO (2) QUESTIONS 1 (a) Define (i)_‘Fire Hazard (ii) Fire Risk. [6 Marks} (b) With the use of at least two examples of each, differentiate between : (i) Active Fire Safety, and (ii) Passive Fire Safety 18 Marks} (0) Briefly explain the steps that you will use to set up a Fire Safety Programme for ONE (1) of the following: () A Secondary School with 800 students housed in 6 different Buildings. (i) A restaurant with capacity of 75 customers [11 Marks} page2 2.(a) Explain what you understand by the following in Industri (i) TLV TWA. [4 Marks} (b) Identify and briefly explain three (3) Entry Points for toxic substances into the Human Body. [6 Marks] (©) Ina plant where lead-acid batteries are manufactured, 50 workers work an 8 hour work day involving the casting lead plates, pasting the lead plates with Iead oxide then assembling these plates into cells for the batteries. Recognizing that these workers are exposed to lead that is highly toxic, (i) Identify the risks that these workers are exposed to while working in the plant. Suggest ways of minimizing the risks that the workers are exposed to on a daily basis. Suggest a medical plan for the 0 workers of the plant. [15 Marks] Gi) ii) 3. (a) With the use of at least one example, explain what you understand by: (i) Steady Noise (ii) Impact Noise [6 Marks} (b) What are the risks associated with workers exposed to vibrations from work. Suggest ways of minimizing these risks for workers : (i) Using vibration tools (i) Working on vibrating platforms. [8 Marks} (b) A compressor on an offshore platform, compresses gas from off shore il wells before this gas is sent to land for processing and use. This compressor works 24 hours per day. Many of the workers on the platform complain about the noise from this compressor. A measurement of the noise showed it was 95 dBA. ‘As a Health and Safety Officer, identify the steps you would suggest to reduce the noise to an acceptable level.
