2 Overview
Background
In radio communications systems, the wanted signals sent by voice users on radio channels reach the NodeB through multiple paths. The NodeB
receives these signals and combines them together to provide optimal performance. In weak coverage scenarios, weak wanted signals on multiple paths
cannot be effectively identified and received. This causes link quality to deteriorate, service drop rate to increase, and user experience to be affected.
Introduction
While improving the channel estimation accuracy, the Voice Coverage Improvement by Advanced Demodulation feature increases the demodulation
signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This enhances the coverage performance for voice traffic radio bearers (TRBs) and the associated signaling radio bearers
(SRBs) over the dedicated physical data channel (DPDCH).
Benefits
This feature improves the performance of voice services (including adaptive multirate narrowband (AMR-NB) and adaptive multirate wideband (AMR-WB)
services). Specifically, this feature:
• Improves coverage performance by 0.2 dB to 1 dB for voice TRBs and associated SRBs over the DPDCH.
• Decreases the proportion of low-MOS voice services by 10% to 30%.
NOTE:
A low MOS defined in the ITU-T Recommendation P.863 is an MOS less than 3.
3 Technical Description
Concepts
RAKE
In WCDMA, signal bandwidth is large and radio propagation is subject to multipath fading. Based on multipath diversity reception technology, the RAKE
receiver identifies, weights, and accumulates multipath signals that arrive across distinguishable time instants. In this manner, combined enhanced
signals are generated. Figure 3-1 shows the working principle of the RAKE receiver.
Figure 3-1 Working principle of the RAKE receiver
Doppler Effect
The Doppler effect (or the Doppler shift) is the change in frequency of a wave (or other periodic event) for an observer (for example, UEs) moving relative
to its source (for example, NodeBs). The frequency shift caused by the Doppler effect is in direct proportion to the relative velocity.
Principles
This feature is enabled by running the NodeB MML command SET ULOCELLALGPARA with the COVERIMPBASEDONADVDEM parameter set to
ON(ON).
Demodulation and decoding performance of voice services depends on channel estimation accuracy. The NodeB performs correlation estimation on
channel conditions using pilot symbols on the DPCCH and combines received signals using the RAKE receiver. This feature introduces high-precision
Doppler estimation to evaluate channel conditions and uses enhanced channel estimation on the DPCCH and DPDCH for voice users on the NodeB side.
Figure 3-2 shows how this feature is implemented.
When the NodeB detects that the channel environment for UEs is changing slowly (UEs are moving at a speed below 30 km/h), more pilot symbols on the
DPCCH are used to improve channel estimation accuracy. Figure 3-4 shows the estimation accuracy improvement. When the NodeB detects that UEs are
moving at a high speed, the DPCCH-based enhanced channel estimation function does not take effect.
Figure 3-4 Channel estimation accuracy improvement for UEs moving at a low speed
If CEs are sufficient for the UEs this feature takes effect on, decoded information on the DPDCH is used as pilot signals for the NodeB to estimate
channel conditions. If CEs are insufficient, the DPDCH-based enhanced channel estimation function does not take effect.
NOTE:
CEs can be monitored using performance counters. For details, see 6.5 Performance Monitoring.
After this feature takes effect, end-to-end delay on voice services is lengthened by 0–20 ms. KPIs, such as service drop rate and access success rate,
remain unchanged.
The NodeB combines the estimation results obtained using the preceding functions to generate a more accurate channel fading estimation, as shown in
Figure 3-5.

Impacted Features
WRFD-160204 CS Voice Precise Power Control When the CS Voice Precise Power Control feature is enabled,
optimized multipath searching is used to improve the accuracy of
channel estimation, reducing gains provided by this feature.
WRFD-160250 Interference Rejection Combining In scenarios where the Interference Rejection Combining (IRC) feature
(IRC) takes effect and interference signals are correlated, gains provided by
this feature leveraging signal correlation are reduced.
5 Network Impact
System Capacity
No impact.
Network Performance
• Coverage
This feature improves coverage performance by 0.2 dB to 1 dB for uplink voice TRBs and the associated SRBs over the DPDCH.
• MOS
This feature decreases the proportion of low-MOS voice services by 10% to 30%.
• CE resource
This feature increases uplink CE consumption. When the ratio of AMR users to total users is about 10%, uplink CE consumption is increased
by 10%.
NOTE:
A low MOS defined in the ITU-T Recommendation P.863 is an MOS less than 3.
If CEs are congested, the gains delivered by this feature decrease because CEs are preferentially used for user access.
6 Engineering Guidelines
NOTE:
1. Densely populated urban areas can be defined as having a generally flat terrain and an average building height of 25 m to 30 m,
distributed with irregular spacings of 10 m to 20 m. In addition, most streets (not trunk roads) are narrow, and the distance
between each two base stations is 300 m to 500 m.
2. In non-densely populated urban areas, this feature is also applicable but the gains are low.
NOTE:
1. For details about information required for CE usage calculation, see 6.2 Required Information. For details about the calculation of CE
usage, see "CE Usage" in RAN Capacity Monitoring Guide.
2. In scenarios with high CE usage, this feature is also applicable but the gains are low.

If RAN Sharing or MOCN is enabled, the licensed value is allocated among the primary and secondary operators according to the method in the License
Allocation for Multiple Operators column.
Method 2: Some license control items, for example, UL CE Num, can be allocated through both the common group and private groups. In this case, the
licensed value specified by the private group is preferentially used, and the licensed value specified by the common group is used on a first-come, first-
served basis. For NodeB license allocation in multi-operator scenarios, see License Management Feature Parameter Description.
Other Requirements
To pre-evaluate and evaluate feature gains, you are advised to enable the following functions for all or some of the cells under the RNC, one week before
the feature activation:
To enable the preceding functions, perform the following steps (using the BSC6910 as an example):
NOTE:
To obtain an accurate evaluation of improvements, it is good practice to set MrIntraFreqPeriod(BSC6900,BSC6910) to a value less than that
of EcN0EffectTime(BSC6900,BSC6910). You are advised to set MrIntraFreqPeriod(BSC6900,BSC6910) to D2. Parameter setting in the
preceding step increases control-plane data transmissions and processing load. This ultimately increases the RNC SPU CPU usage by
approximately 5%. For details about parameters and precautions, see descriptions of the SET UMRCTRL command in BSC6900 UMTS MML
Command Reference or BSC6910 UMTS MML Command Reference.
4. Turn on the switch for measuring the counters related to AMR coverage performance.
SET UCORRMPARA: PerfEnhanceSwitch8=PERFENH_AMR_TB_RSCP_STAT_SWITCH-1;
NOTE:
When MrIntraFreqPeriod is set to D2, measurement on coverage performance counters increases the DSP usage by about 5% at most.

Switch CME is supported.
6.4.2.2 Using MML Commands
Run the NodeB MML command SET ULOCELLALGPARA with COVERIMPBASEDONADVDEM set to ON(ON) to enable the Voice Coverage
Improvement by Advanced Demodulation feature.
NOTE:
When configuring the feature on the CME, perform a single configuration first, and then perform a batch modification if required.
Configure the parameters of a single object before a batch modification. Perform a batch modification before logging out of the parameter setting
interface.
To modify objects in batches, click on the CME to start the batch modification wizard. For instructions on how to perform a batch
modification through the CME batch modification center, press F1 while running the wizard to obtain online help.
To check whether a parameter supports batch modification, see the Remarks column in the table in "Data Preparation" section.
6.4.4 Deactivation
The following table provides parameters for deactivating this feature.
You can use the CME or run MML commands to deactivate this feature
Performance Monitoring
Enable this feature after EVQI-related counters have been monitored for one week. Wait another week and then compare the values of these counters
obtained before and after this feature is enabled to monitor the performance gain. It is expected that the proportion of AMR services with low EVQIs
decreases.
NOTE:
The proportions of AMR-WB services with excellent, good, acceptable, poor, and bad uplink EVQIs are calculated in similar ways. The proportion of AMR-
WB services with acceptable, poor, and bad uplink EVQIs is calculated using the following formula:
Proportion of AMR-WB services with acceptable, poor, and bad uplink EVQIs = (VS.EVQI.AMRWB.UL.Accept.Num(BSC6900,BSC6910) +
VS.EVQI.AMRWB.UL.Poor.Num(BSC6900,BSC6910) +
VS.EVQI.AMRWB.UL.Bad.Num(BSC6900,BSC6910))/(VS.EVQI.AMRWB.UL.Excellent.Num(BSC6900,BSC6910) +
VS.EVQI.AMRWB.UL.Good.Num(BSC6900,BSC6910) + VS.EVQI.AMRWB.UL.Accept.Num(BSC6900,BSC6910) +
VS.EVQI.AMRWB.UL.Poor.Num(BSC6900,BSC6910) + VS.EVQI.AMRWB.UL.Bad.Num(BSC6900,BSC6910)) x 100%
Improved Coverage for Voice Services
BLERs of TRBs for AMR services in different RSCP ranges are calculated in similar ways. For example, the BLER of TRBs for AMR services in RSCP
range 0 is calculated using the following formula:
BLER=VS.UL.AMR.ErrTbNum.RSCP.0(BSC6900,BSC6910)/VS.UL.AMR.TotalTbNum.RSCP.0(BSC6900,BSC6910)
BLERs of associated SRBs for AMR services in different RSCP ranges are calculated in similar ways. For example, the BLER of associated SRBs for
AMR services in RSCP range 0 is calculated using the following formula:
BLER=VS.UL.SRB.AMR.ErrTbNum.RSCP.0(BSC6900,BSC6910)/VS.UL.SRB.AMR.TotalTbNum.RSCP.0(BSC6900,BSC6910)
Figure 6-1 shows the coverage improvement.
NOTE:
Performance evaluation relies on the RSCP value contained in UE's intra-frequency measurement reports, which are not sent to the RNC until services
are successfully set up. Therefore, RSCP values before a successful service setup are not contained in the evaluation.
Increased CE Consumption
Observe and compare CE-related counters before and after this feature is enabled. It is expected that the CE consumption increases.
NOTE:
Feature gains are diminished due to high CE consumption. If the CE consumption is high (above 70%), you are advised to expand the CE capacity. For
details about the calculation of CE usage, see "CE Usage" in RAN Capacity Monitoring Guide.
