 The definition of self employment is "the state of working for oneself as a freelance or

the owner of a business rather than for an employer." Being self employed means that
you are responsible for negotiating your own contracts including things such as working
hours and wage however, after negotiating a contract with an agent the agent will be
responsible for negotiating contracts for you. Another element of being self employed is
that you choose which jobs you take as an agent will offer you auditions and jobs but
you are free to decline any. You are also responsible for finding your own work if you do
not have an agent and securing your own work with auditions. Furthermore as you are
your own boss you need to know your rights by law so that any person/company cannot
exploit you. Additionally as you are self employed you will have to buy/rent your own
equipment this could include audition outfits, dance wear, dance shoes, scores/song
books etc and these will be your responsibility to keep safe and in good condition. You
will also have to do your own research about the industry as it will help you to find out
