a. Complete the Virtual Transport Lab by going here and following all directions.

i. Document Initial and Final Masses of all dialysis tubes.

A. 17.59g, 17.66g
B. 8.75g, 10.40g
C. 11.24g, 12.10g
D. 10.71g, 10.57g
E. 18.05g, 15.60g
ii. Graph the tubes. AP FRQ Questions like transport graphs.

iii. Answer the following ‘Lab’ Questions

1. Why was dialysis tubing used
The tubing simulates a cell membrane due to its semi-permeable abilities derived
from cellulose.
2. What substance(s) is transporting in an out of the dialysis tubing? How do you know?
Water is transporting in and out of the dialysis tubing through osmosis. Water travels
from lower solute concentration to higher concentration in order to balance interior
and exterior of cell conditions.
3. If this experiment was performed on a plant cell (we do celery in class) how would the
results have differed?
The mass would’ve stayed relatively similar in all the trials due to the cell wall
preventing bursting.
4. What type of transport was modeled in this virtual lab?
Passive (osmosis)
5. How could a different type of transport be tested/modeled in a similar lab environment
(assuming done in person and not virtually)?
Test how different liquids flow in and out of a gummy bear.
