Read the following passage and answer all the questions in PARTS A, B, C and D. The anatomy of a hurricane ' Hurricanes are potentially the most dangerous and the costliest of severe weather systems. In 1900, the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history ‘smashed into Galveston, Texas, killing over 8,000 people and causing $30 million in damage. Residents had little waming that this storm was coming. When they realized the storm is a major hurricane, it was too 5 late to evacuate. People were trapped by the storm. Even though residents of the Mississippi Gulf Coast had more waming for Hurricane Camille in 1969, 56 people died and damage was estimated at $1.4 billion. By the time Hurricane Andrew was storming toward the Florida coast in 1992, scientists understood a lot more about weather systems. 10 Their ability to predict these systems had improved significantly. With advance warning, more than one million people along the southem Florida coast were safely evacuated from the area. Although 26 people died in this storm, many more would have died without this warning. Unfortunately, Hurricane Andrew was the most expensive storm in U.S. 15 history with damages costing around $26 billion. " A hurricane requires two conditions to develop and thrive: large areas of warm water (80°F or above) and wind. These conditions are found in the tropics that lie five degrees to the north and south of the equator. This large area of warm water is the birthplace of violent 20 storms, called typhoons if they occur over the Pacific Ocean and hurricanes if they happen over the Atlantic Ocean ‘SBLE1043 English for Communication If Matric No. There are four stages within the life of a hurricane. First, as the warn tropical water evaporates, it rises and cool. As it cools, the water vapour condenses into clouds. As the cycle of evaporation and condensation continues, the air begins to move in a circular pattem as it rises to meet the forming clouds. These clouds are clearly visible by satellite and wam scientists that a tropical disturbance is developing, The winds inside the clouds grow stronger when there is a difference in air pressure. As the storm grows, the air at the peak of the clouds cools rapidly and creates an area of low pressure. The low pressure sucks up the warm air below it, and the wind speed increases, The greater the difference in air pressure, the stronger the wind. The wind inside the storm spins faster and faster, and when these winds Teach speeds of between 25 and 38 mph (miles per hour), the storm is called a tropical depression. This is the second stage. Meteorologists who carefully study the data collected by weather satellites now closely monitor the growing storm ‘As winds increases, they spin around what is known as the eye of the stor. This is the center of the storm system. The eye can be clearly seen on satellites as a black circle within the white swirling cloud mass. The eye itself is very calm. As the winds spin around the eye to speed above 39 mph, the storm reaches its third stage, known as a tropical storm. At this stage, the ‘World Meteorological Organization chooses a name for the storm from an alphabetical list. Names alternate between male and female ones. When the winds increase to over 47 mph, the tropical storm enters the fourth stage and becomes a hurricane. In the United States, the hurricane season is from July to October, when ocezn waters are warm enough for tropical depressions to begin. Even 25 30 40 45 SBLE1043 English for Communication It Matric No, vi before this time period, meteorologists at NOAA (the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) study weather conditions and ocean temperatures to predict how many hurricanes could ‘occur that season. As July approaches, meteorologists carefully monitor tropical depressions and track these depressions as wind blows them westward. As a tropical storm or hurricanes moves toward land, warnings are broadcast on television and radio, and people begin to prepare for the storm. Scientists continue to leam more about these extreme weather systems. As technology continues to advance, weather forecasts will become more accurate. However, meteorologists are concerned that even with the improved forecasts and waming systems, a major hurricane could still lead to a huge loss of life along the Gulf of Atlantic coast. First, they worry because the shorelines of these hurricane prone areas attract the large number of people. NOAA estimates 45 million people are living along these coastlines, and new houses continue to built every day — right on the beaches in many cases. Furthermore, during the peak tourists’ season, the population of these areas increases dramatically. Evacuation of such a huge number of people is very difficult. The second concem is the technology itself. People can have too much faith in technology. They believe that accurate forecasts and wamings will prevent damage from hurricanes. They also believe this technology will keep them safe. Scientists worry that this attitude could lead to loss of life in a future hurricane. After all, technology allows us to understand nature better, but not to control its power. ‘Adapted from ‘The anatomy of hurricane. (2004). Read Ahead 2: Reading and Lite Skills Development.
