Complete the text using the correct forms of the verbs in brackets.

When I (1 opened) the door I (2 saw) a man on his knees. He clearly (3 listened) to our conversation, and I (4 wonder)
how much he (5 heard). When I (6 asked) what he (7 was doing), he (8 said) that he (9 dropped) a 50p piece outside
the door and (10 is looking) for it. I (11 didn’t see) any sign of money, but I (12 found) a small notebook and pencil
which he probably (13 dropped) when the door (14 opened) suddenly. So he (15 was taking) notes of our
conversation! The notes (16 were) written in a foreign language, so I (17 turned) to the stranger and (18 asked) him to
translate. But he (19 pulled) my hat over my eyes and (20 ran) off down the corridor. By the time I (21 recovered)
from the shock, he (22 had disappeared) round the corner. Curiously enough, when I (23 moved) my foot, I (24 found)
that I (25 standing) on a 5p piece. Perhaps he (26 did tell) the truth after all!
