Explaining words
You can use the expressions a kind of and kind of like to explain a word:

A What are sprinkles?


B They're a kind of candy. (= they're a type of candy)
or
B They're like sugar. (= they're similar to sugar)
or
B They're kind of like sugar. (= they're a little similar to sugar

Like
You can use like to give examples:

You can put sprinkles on things like ice cream and cake.
