SAMPLE SPIEL: Kids, today, we are going to hear the story of very unlikely hero. He
was scared to do a lot of things at first. But God gave him courage
For today’s story, the judges’ name is Gideon. His name means "One who cuts down
[the enemy]".
Although he thought "his clan was the weakest in Manasseh and was the least
in his family" [Judges 6:15], God used him mightily in freeing his people
from the oppression of the Midianites. Let's find out more.
But before that, let us first sing the Bible Time Song!
(Sing the Bible Time Song. It would be better to show a real Bible.)
Here we are now the Bible time, Bible time, Bible time.
Here we are now the Bible time, so let’s sit down and listen.
Open our eyes so you can see
Open your ears so you can hear
Open your nose so you can smell
Clap your hands and zip your mouth.
Judges 6:1-35
GIDEON
SKIT
Narrator: Today we are going to tell the story of the amazing thing God did when
Gideon and the Israelites defeated the Midianites.
Gideon: My name is Gideon. You know, at first, I did not want to believe that God
called me to fight for the Israelites. I thought he was talking to someone else! I saw
myself as the weakest in the family, from the weakest tribe in Israel.
Narrator: But the Lord still chose him. The angel who appeared to him said:
Angel: You are a mighty warrior and you will save God’s people. The Lord will be with
you and you will defeat the Midianites.
Narrator: God ordered him to destroy the idols they had at home. He was so afraid that
he had to wait until it was nighttime before he destroyed it. Gideon took ten men of his
servants to take down the altar of Baal and the Asherah pole. He built an altar for the
Lord, and used the wood of the Asherah pole for the burnt offering. The men of the town
were so mad when they saw what happened. They learned it was so him so they
wanted to kill him. But his father said
Did you know we are saved by God’s grace today just like Israel was in Gideon’s day?
God saved Israel not with the strongest man or the strongest tribe so that they could
see that it was by God’s grace, not their own work. Our salvation comes when we, like
Gideon, believe in God’s plan to save us.

Who did God choose to conquer the Midiniates? Gideon
How did Gideon know he was called? An angel of the Lord appeared to him.
What did God order Gideon to accomplish? Destroy the altars of Baal and Asherah
pole
Discussion:
Did you know we are saved by God’s grace today just like Israel was in Gideon’s day?
God saved Israel using the most unlikely person so they could see that it was by God’s
grace, not their own work. They could not boast in their own efforts. Our salvation
comes when we, like Gideon, believe in God’s plan to save us. We can’t do it by our
own work either. None of us can boast and say, “I saved myself!” The apostle Paul
wrote, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not you own
doing; it is the gift of God, not result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Guide the children in reciting the power truth and power verse.
