Lesson Plan

Part 1

Part 1: Describe the student for whom you are developing this reading lesson. What

are his/her strengths and weaknesses in his/her native language and in English, and special

characteristics? Describe also the setting where this lesson will be implemented.

Ahmed is a twelve-year-old male from Saudi Arabia, who is also the third born of his family.

Ahmed has a reading disability that has been daunting his parents, especially since Ahmed’s

peers are doing well in school. Primarily, his disability can be termed as Dyslexia, which entails

difficulty in reading that ensue from coordinating speech sounds as well as relating them to

letters and even words. Unfortunately, this disability has rocked Ahmed for a while. When

Ahmed was five years old, he was exhibiting abnormal behaviours that did not occur in any of

his siblings, and on diagnosis, they found that he had dyslexia. Since childhood, Ahmed has

always been extremely playful yet disorganized and mischievous. However, his disability

became apparent when he could not coordinate sounds together with the written words.

Strengths

Despite all these difficulties, he does his best to ensure that he copes and learns like the other

students. Moreover, individuals suffering from Dyslexia face few cognitive problems.

Subsequently, this means that going to a public school may not be much of a challenge for

Ahmed. Perhaps, that is why he can adhere to the demands of a public school environment just

like the other children. Much as Ahmed occasionally fails to deliver in class due to challenges

such as anxiety, attitude, and mood, he participates like the other students.

Ahmed is a creative child since he can find alternatives when there are limitations and

seek help from other people if things at his school do not go as expected. At times the school

might not provide adequate resources to help Ahmed with his condition. In such a situation,

Ahmed finds another way to achieve his objective from a particular lesson, and this has enabled

him to survive in a public environment characterized by limitations. Ahmed is also a

compassionate child as he takes his colleagues’ challenges personal and willing to assist them in

any way possible. This has helped him to connect with other children and fit in the environment

of the public school. Consequently, these attributes have enabled Ahmed to adhere to the

pressure in class and at school.

Weaknesses

Ahmed struggles to move at the same speed as the other students, and this has adversely

impacted his learning capabilities. His coordination of speech sounds and words has immensely

affected his development. Besides, it is hard for him to organize his timetable, homework, and

preparing for discussions. Additionally, since Ahmed cannot concentrate well and communicate

effectively, he finds it hard to understand what they teach. Besides, he reckons that his memory

has always not functioned well, so he often forgets what the teacher taught them in class.

Setting

Part 2: Explain and justify your reason for selecting the lesson you plan to teach this

student. What prerequisite skills should your student have in order to learn this lesson?

Part 4

A. What are the characteristics of the student’s reading difficulties.

b. What prevention and intervention methods and strategies would you use with this

student?

c. What explicit and systematic instructional methods would you use for developing this

student’s reading fluency (e.g., practice with high-frequency words, timed readings,

repeated readings, teacher read aloud, choral reading, and recorded books)?)

d. Explicit and systematic instructional methods and strategies

Multiple strategy instruction would be pertinent to ensure that the student accrues the best results

from the lessons in place. With this, the module of study will solely be based on his adaptation to

the environment as well as the concept being conveyed. For instance, it is a case of reading in

class, Ahmed would be given ample time to read and comprehend, despite the pace of the other

students.

Question answering would also be vital to propel Ahmed to one of the best students in the

class. In this case, the instructor would allow Ahmed to come up with questions regarding the

subjects taught in class. For instance, if it is naming cities, he may ask about the geographical

location of the cities, their infrastructure and even tourist attractions. The aim of this method is to

ensure that Ahmed can acclimatize to the callings of the lesson as well as the immediate

environment.
