Rocks which have solidified directly from molten materials are called igneous rocks. Igneous rocks are commonly referred to as primary rocks because they are the original source of material found in sedimentaries and metamorphics. Igneous rocks compose the greater part of the earth’s crust, but, they are generally covered at the surface by a relatively thin layer of sedimentary or metamorphic rocks. Igneous rocks are distinguished by the following characteristics: : (1) they contain no fossils; (2) they have no regular arrangement of layers; anid (3) they are nearly always made up of crystals. Sedimentary rocks are composed largely of minute fragments derived from the disintegration of existing rocks and in some instances from the remains of animals. As sediments are transported, individual fragments are assorted according to size. Distinct layers of such sediments are gravels, sand, and clay build up, as they are deposited by water and occasionally wind. These sediments vary in size with the material and the power of the eroding agent. Sedimentary materials are laid down in layers called strata. , When sediments harden into sedimentary rocks, the names applied to them change to indicate the change in physical state. Thus, small stones and gravel cemented together are known as conglomerates; cemented sand becomes sandstone; and hardened clay becomes shale. In addition to these, other sedimentary rocks such as limestone frequently result from the deposition of dissolved material. The ingredient parts are normally precipitated by organic substances, such as shells of clams or hard skeletons of other marine life. Both igneous and sedimentary rocks may be changed by pressure, heat, solution, or cementing action. When individual grains from existing rocks tend to deform and interlock, they are called metamorphic rocks. The primary purpose of the passage is to : (A) differentiate between and characterize igneous and sedimentary rocks (B) define and describe several diverse kinds of rocks (C) explain why rocks are basic’ parts of earth’s structure {D) explain the factors that may cause rocks to change in form. The author’s tone in the passage can best be described as : (A) Bombastic ®) Tronic (C) Objective (D) Concerned All of the following are sedimentary rocks except : (A) Sand (B) Limestone (C) Schist ) Shale The passage would be most likely to appear in a : (A) Technical article for geologists (B) Technical manual accompanying an earth science text (C) Newspaper feature explaining how oil is found (D)’ Pamphlet promoting conservation of natural resources ‘Which of the following methods is not used by the author ? This is happening through a vicious cycle of anxiety-tension-stress-depression-nervous breakdown. The problem Paper I—C 16 percolates to the entire human structure touching health of the body, mind and spirit. To prepare a sound mind in a sound body is a coveted definition of education. But. in the present life-cycle dynamics everything seems to explode. More 60 for those aspiring to be competitive winners irrespective of the field, the killer instinet:is soon becoming a self killing process. Much has been spoken and written about the evil effects of stress and its psychosomatic repercussions. Many so- lutions have been offered by counselling agencies across the globe—some bor- dering on spiritual remedies, while large chunk depending upon psychiatric- psychic process. Many have also recommended physical activity to control stress and depression. However, an integrated approach to life management programme in the competitive environment could probably be the most easy and efficient course of remedy, But what is not clearly taken into reckoning is the fact that the body, the mind and the spirit all the three together form an ‘individual and therefore, the health of each of these three components is equally important and has a separate existence. For instance, when the mind is disturbed, thereby creating unhealthiness in the intellectual-emotional plane, the body despite being in absolute physical comfort still gets affected and is often the victim. Therefore, it is necessary to understand fear and conquer it at the first place in order to arrest spread of anxiety, stress, tension and depression. 46. Basic objective of this passage is to project : (A) Ways of remaining healthy (B) Avoidance of anxiety (C) Avoidance of competitive spirit (D) Causes’ of mental ill health . 47. Anxiety leads to nervous breakdown IL Stress has evil. effects on health (A) Tis right and II is wrong (B) 1 is wrong and Il is right (©) I and II both are right (D) I and II both are wrong 48. The whole passage is structured in the form which may be called : (A) Narrative ®) Explanatory (©) Analytical (©) Expository 49. The most appropriate title for the passage would be : (A) Evil effects of competition (B) Managing good health (©) Overcoming stress (D) Managing good living 50.
