LIGHT
Background Information
Light is a form of energy which can be detected by the human eye. It travels in a straight path very
fast at around 300,000 kilometres per second. Light is basically everywhere. We use light to heat our food,
melt metals and even tan our skin.

Light energy has different types. One of the types of light is Visible light. It is a type of electromagnetic
energy that can be seen through the naked eye. Our main source of visible light is the sun but it can also be
emitted by artificial lights such as lanterns, flashlight, light bulbs etc.

One of the most important characteristics of visible light is color. When white
light shines through a prism or through water vapor like a rainbow, the white
light is broken apart into the colors of the visible light spectrum. This
phenomenon is called dispersion. Dispersion is a special kind of refraction which
provides us colors of light.

When you see a rainbow, you notice that the colors always follow the same arrangement - ROYGBIV.
Colors in the rainbow actually show the hierarchy or level of energy that a certain color has.
This Visible Light Spectrum shows the wavelength and
frequency of each color. Wavelength is the distance
between two successive wave crests or troughs while
Frequency is the number of waves that passes per second.
These two also show the energy that a certain color has.
Note:
HIGH
● The shorter the wavelength, the higher the energy.
● The higher the frequency, the higher the energy.
● energy is directly proportional to the frequency and inversely proportional to wavelength.

Learning Competency:

Explain the hierarchy of colors in relation to the energy of visible light.

Code: S8FE-Q1/Week4
Activity 1- Color the Rainbow
Direction: Complete the Rainbow by coloring the rays according to the hierarchy of colors

Activity 2- Looking for a Change

Direction: Using the Visible Light Spectrum, compare the wavelength of the two colors. Write “L” if the
color has a longer wavelength and “S” if the color has a shorter wavelength.
1. Red and Blue
2. Indigo and Yellow
3. Orange and Blue
4. Violet and Red
5. Yellow and Violet

Activity 3 – Energy of Colors

Direction: Use numbers 1 to 7 to arrange the colors according to their energy. 1 is the color with the
lowest energy while 7 is the highest.

Blue Orange Green Red Violet Yellow Indigo

Activity 4 – I can see your true colors

Direction: When you light a matchstick, most of its color is orange light; when you light a gas stove you
mostly see blue light. Why are the colors different? What is the relationship of the color of light with the
energy produced by the items?

Evaluation:
Direction: Read the following statements and identify which statement is true and which is not. Write
“TRUE” if the statement is correct and “FALSE” if not.
__________ 1. Light travels in a straight path very slowly.

__________ 2. Dispersion is a special kind of refraction which provided us colors of light

__________ 3. Flashlight can emit light

__________ 4. Wavelength is the distance between two successive wave crests or troughs

__________ 5. The shorter the wavelength of light, the higher the energy.

__________ 6. The higher the frequency of light, the higher the energy

__________ 7. Blue has lower energy than Orange

__________ 8. The lower the frequency of light, the higher the energy

__________ 9. Red has the lowest energy.
