RADIATION PRODUCTION
- Mass is the quantity of matter as described by its energy equivalence whereas weight is the
force exerted on a body under the influence of gravity.
3. How is x-ray interaction different from that seen in other types electromagnetic radiation?
- X-rays interact at the electron level or nuclear level, ionizing an atom or ejecting a nuclear
particle, respectively. Lower-energy electromagnetic radiation interacts with molecules, cells,
and larger objects in a way that will usually elevate the temperature of the object.
- The purpose of x-ray beam filtration is to keep low-energy x-rays from reaching the patient.
Such x-rays do not reach the image receptor. Filtration results in lower patient radiation dose.
5. Describe the process that results in the formation of a negative and a positive ion.
- An x-ray, for instance, interacts with an orbital electron of an atom of tissue. The electron
absorbs some energy from the x-ray and is released from the atom. The electron (negative ion)
and resulting atom (positive ion) are called an ion pair
7. Name devices designed to minimize radiation exposure to the patient and operator.
- Energy emitted and transferred through space is called radiation. When a piano string vibrate,
it is said to radiate sound, the sound is a form of radiation.
- Cathode rays are streams of electrons observed in discharge tubes. If an evacuated glass tube
is equipped with two electrodes and a voltage is applied, glass behind the positive electrode is
observed to glow, due to electrons emitted from the cathode.
