(b Study Sources B and C

How different are Sources B and C? Explain your answer.

[7]

Sources B and C are very different. The sources are different in

showing whether foreigners should be citizens or not.

Source B, written by a Singaporean university student tells us that

foreigners should not be able to become Singapore citizens. This is

because the foreigners culture might clash with the Singaporeans

culture. Even if they do become citizens, many Singaporeans will

still view them as foreigners. This is stated in Source B “PM Lee said

we will have to allow more foreigners to become Singapore citizens.

I do not think that is a good idea although they do contribute to our

economy.” Therefore, this source does not support the idea of

foreigners becoming citizens.

2

However, in source C, written by a foreigner who lives in Singapore,

says that foreigners should not be used as a scapegoat and have to

be a part of Singapore’s national identity. This is because foreigners

have contributed a lot to Singapore’s economy. This is stated in

source C,’And while I understand the need to preserve a

Singaporean identity, I hope we [foreigners] do not end up becoming

a convenient scapegoat* for the country’s woes. I think we are part

of Singapore’s national identity. . Thus, this source wants foreigners

to be able to belong to the community as citizens

Since these two evidence contrast each other. They are very

different sources.

(c) Study Source D

How reliable is Source D in saying that foreigners do not

threaten Singapore’s national identity? Explain your answer.

3

Source D is reliable in showing that foreigners do not threaten

Singapore’s national identity.

Source D is reliable as it is from a university professor as it can be

trusted. The source says that Singapore was formed by migrants

from all over Asia and it is what formed the national identity. The

source feels that foreigners are a chance for us to create a new

identity.. This is stated in the source,”We have always been a

melting pot of various culture, tradition and ethnicity so why can’t we

take it as a time to form a new national identity?”

Source f corroborates with Source D in saying that foreigners do not

threaten Singapore’ identity. Prime Minister lee, the provenance of this

source states that Singaporeans will flame the foreigners when they do

something wrong but not themselves. This shows that Singaporeans are

xenophobic. The source states there are Singaporeans that behave

badly, but Singaporeans themselves do not think that they are a threat.

But when one foreigner does a bad [8] thing, Singaporeans will view all

foreigners as a threat to the national identity. Singaporeans should not

view all foreigners as a threat based on the actions of those who behave

badly. This is stated in source F,”While it is all right to express

disapproval, we must not condemn all non-Singaporeans based on the

actions of a few.”

Therefore Source D is reliable as Source F supports it.*1 hour*

(d Study Source E

Is Source E useful in showing Singaporeans’ sentiments

towards foreigners? Explain your answer.

I think Source E is useful in showing Singaporeans’ sentiments

towards foreigners. This is because the graphs shows the

Singaporean views towards foreigners and their contributions. An

evidence is the question” Do Singaporeans need the foreigners?”

Most of the results were yes and not no. [7]

(e) Study Source F

Are you surprise by what Source F says about accepting foreigners

in Singapore? Explain your answer. [7]

2 Sustaining Economic Development in a Globalising World

(a) Explain how MNCs (multinational corporations) drive

globalisation in Singapore.

MNCs are businesses with economic activities in more than one country.

The global span of their operations drives globalisation as they increase the

economic interconnections between people and goods throughout the

world. These interconnections can also lead to interdependent relationships

between the parties involved in the operations of the MNCs. There are

MNCs which operate in many countries. Such MNCs are like Starbucks

which operates in over 65 countries.

Singapore is also home to many MNCs. This makes Singapore a major

site of international business today. This has created interconnections and

interdependent relationships between economic activities in Singapore

and the rest of the world. An example of a Singaporean owned MNC is the

Singapore airlines.

Thus MNCs help drive globalisation in Singapore by using interconnections

and interdependent relationships between the parties involved.

[7]

(b Explain two other factors that drive globalisation, and which is more )

important.

The other factor is advance in technology and developments in

transportation. I think development in transportation is more important. [8]

Nigel

Q1(a) The cartoon was drawn to show how difficult it is to become a Singapore permanent resident.

Being a Singapore PR is difficult and becoming is a great achievement for most foreigners. As

shown in Source A, there are two mountain climbers who are climbing the Mount Everest, clearly

climbing the Mount Everest is a very difficult and risky task to perform. With the Singapore Flag

representing the top of the mountain, shows that not many foreigners can achieve the Singaporean

PR title. The cartoonist is showing that becoming a Singaporean PR is not easy, the cartoonist,

therefore use Mount Everest with two climbers showing of a PR t-shirt, shows how proud they are to

be part of Singapore and the effort they put in to achieve it.

(b) Source B and C are different in a way that Source B is stating how letting foreigners into

Singapore is not a good thing unlike Source C contradicting Source B stating how they are trying

their best to integrate into Singapore. Letting foreigners coming into Singapore has advantages and

disadvantages. The advantages of this is that we can have more foreign talent and can learn their

culture since we are a multi-national society. The one of the disadvantages is that we must compete

with them and will have more difficulty climbing the social-economic-status (SES) ladder. The

evidence in Source B is ‘ Our local culture will clash with their foreign culture, threatening our sense

of national identity. Secondly, even when they have their Singaporean citizenship, we are still able

to differentiate them from the locals so majority will still view them as foreigners, apart from us

Singaporeans’. Whereas, the evidence of Source C contradicting Source B is ‘ We’ve done our best

to integrate and been welcomed in return, with friends inviting us to visit their homes and celebrate

with them at weddings, parties and religious festivals’. These two evidences clash as Source B

states that letting foreigners into Singapore leads to a clash in cultures and Source C states how

they, foreigners are trying their best to integrate into society.

(c) Source D seems quite reliable as first, the provenance is a research paper by Peidong Yang, a

local university professor, which was published in the Journal of Social Issues in Southeast Asia,

which is quite reliable since this author is a university professor.
