How were their motivations for finding Wilber different? Cite evidence from the text to support
your answer.

In the story, Li-Jun and his 3 friends were motivated to find Wilbur by different

things. Lin-Jun was motivated by the $50 reward. He wanted to find the cat by

himself, so he would receive all the reward money. His friends, however, were

motivated by the fact that they wanted to find Wilbur and return him to Mrs.

Kowalski because it was the right thing to do. They made posters, brought

supplies, and created a search plan, all with the goal of finding Wilbur. In the

end, Li-Jun realized that finding and returning Wilbur was the best motivation, not

the money.

Dear Journal, Today was an eventful day. I woke up to the news that Mrs. Kowalski’s cat,

Wilbur, was missing, and she was giving a $50 reward. I tried looking for Wilbur on my own, but

Jayla, Elinor and Ty wanted to help when they heard the cat was missing. I didn’t tell them

about the reward, hoping they wouldn’t want to help, but they still did. They brought supplies,

posters and created a plan to find Wilbur all without knowing about the money. Together, we

found Wilbur, and I felt so guilty about hiding the money from my friends. We didn’t end up

taking the reward from Mrs. Kowalski. My friends wanted to find Wilbur because it was the right

thing to do. I only wanted the money. I definitely learned a lesson from them that it’s more

important to be kind and helpful than to get a reward.

Read the story, “Sofia Versus the Robots”. What are the similarities and differences between
Sofia’s life in 2035 and our present-day life? Cite evidence from the text to support your
answer.
There are a lot of similarities and differences between Sofia’s life in 2035 and our present-

day life. First, Sofia has an iPhone just like we do. However, Sofia has an IPhone 22 which is not

the same version we have currently. In Sofia’s house, she has a virtual home assistant named

Rafael. He can start the coffee pot, turn on the lights, lock the doors, and turn on and off

anything in her house. In our present-day life, there are devices that can do some of the things

Rafael can do, such as turn off and on lights and music. Although, our current technology

can’t control everything in a house life Rafael. Finally, Sofia rode in a self-driving car, which the

text stated was how everyone traveled. In our present-day life, there are some self-driving cars,

but they are new and not very common. A lot of the things Sofia has in 2035 are present in our

current lives, just not as developed.

Model Example: Constructed Response 1 – Q2:3

Read the text, “Robot Invasion”. Based on information in the text, what advice might a high
school student receive about his/her future when choosing a career? Support your answer
with examples from the text.
The text states that robots and artificial intelligence technology are more

likely to take jobs that are repetitive and predictable. These jobs include flipping

burgers, repairing a car, and giving medication at a pharmacy. Because of this,

a high school student would likely be given the advice to choose a career that

“requires critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills”. These jobs are

harder for robots and AI to complete because they require strategies,

relationships, and interpersonal communication skills. A high school student

should find a career that would be harder for a robot to complete.

artificial intelligence technology, or artificial intelligence programmed into a robot, is the greatest
threat to jobs? Support your opinion with evidence from the text.

In my opinion, artificial intelligence programmed into a robot is the greatest

threat to jobs. This is because it combines the technology and capabilities of

both a robot and AI (artificial intelligence). The physical capabilities of a robot

are important for completing tasks that a job requires. AI can complete tasks,

solve problems, use logical reasoning to make decisions, which makes it capable

of completing a lot of jobs. When these two technologies are combined, they

are a larger threat to taking jobs away from humans.

According to the text, the Birmingham protests and violence from the police

were broadcast on every news station across the United States. The way the

students reacted with not meeting violence with violence resulted in outrage by

Americans at how brutal the attacks were on students, and the police were

criticized. The president called for a peaceful outcome. As a result of the

criticism and pressure to end the protests peacefully, Birmingham officials met

with protest leaders and agreed to terms that started desegregation in the city.

The students’ reaction of nonviolence led to the beginning of reaching their

goals.

5. Read the text, “The Birmingham Children’s March”. Why do you think the Birmingham
Children’s March was considered a “turning point in the Civil Rights Movement”? Cite
evidence from the text to support your answer.

At the beginning of the text, it was stated that in the “spring of 1963, support

for the Civil Rights Movement was declining.” The Birmingham Children’s March

had a lot of publicity throughout the United States. As a result, Birmingham

leaders met with protest leaders and agreed to begin desegregation efforts in

the city. The Birmingham Children’s March was considered a turning point

because the Civil Rights movement was declining, and the march gave it the

publicity it needed, which resulted in the goal of desegregation being met.

At the beginning of the story, both Liv and Zoey were not nice to Steven.

However, as the story progressed, Steven and Zoey started to talk and ended up

helping each other prepare for the talent show. This was a turning point where

Zoey realized Steven wasn’t the enemy. Liv did not feel the same way. She said,

“You told the enemy how to beat you?”. The day of the talent show, Liv

sabotaged Steven’s guitar making it impossible for him to play. Zoey was upset

with her friend for her actions and ended up helping Steven by performing with

him. Zoey and Liv acted very differently towards Steven throughout the story.

structured the text this way? Do you think this was an effective way to structure the text? Use
evidence from the text to support your answer.
The text is structured in chronological order by day and time. I think the author

structured the text in this way because he/she wanted the reader to know what

events occurred on each day/time and how much time passed throughout the

entire story. I think this was an effective way to structure the text because it was

as if each day/time was a chapter in the story. This made the text easy to read

and organized. Also, the fact that the author broke up Saturday into different

times proves that it is the most important part of the story and deserves more

details.

Read the drama, “Androcles and the Lion”. What is the function of the stage directions
(italicized words in parenthesis) in a drama? Would it be a problem if they were not included?
Cite evidence from the text to support your answer.
The function of the stage directions is to provide the characters and people

behind the scenes of a drama more information about each scene and what

the characters are supposed to be doing. For example, in Scene 1, the stage

directions say the scene is in a forest with a large tree stump that the lion is laying

behind and the narrator is in the front corner wearing black robes. These

directions are important because they explain how the scene should look and

where the characters should go. If they weren’t there, the scene might not have

the tree stump, might be set in the jungle, and the narrator might be wearing

white clothes. Stage directions are important because they give directions to the

people preforming the drama.

the role of the narrator in this drama different from most other dramas? Do you think this approach was
effective in this drama? Cite evidence from the text to support your answer.

In this drama, the narrator was involved in the play. She talked to the

characters and ended up being in the action. In most dramas, the narrator does

not interact with the characters in the play and is not in the action. The narrator

usually serves as an outside character, talking about the play as it is happening. I

think this approach was effective because it was different and unexpected.

Because the narrator’s role in this drama was so different than normal, it made it

entertaining.

Read the text, “Online News: How to Tell If It’s Real of Fake”. Why do you think it is important to
know the difference between real and fake news? What could be the consequences of fake
news? Cite evidence from the text to support your answer.
It is important to know the difference between real and fake news because

real news includes facts that actually happened, while fake news is news that is

not true. The reason it is important to know the difference is because fake news is

intentionally misleading, which can make people believe things that didn’t

happen. This is a problem because if people believe fake news, they can share it

with others, which continues to spread false information. Knowing the signs of

real and fake news will help people be better informed.

There are many reasons a news source might intentionally print fake news.

First, they could print them for money. According to the text, one characteristic

of fake news is advertorial, which means it was paid for by an advertiser. So, the

news source might have printed the fake news to make money from the

advertiser. Another reason might be to embarrass a person because a news

source has a bias against them. The text states that another characteristic of

fake news is using unflattering photos, such as someone sneezing or blinking.

I think Liam would handle a similar situation differently in the future. He made

a lot of assumptions about Mrs. Strickland that weren’t true. When he was looking

at her notebook and realized they were sketches, he was embarrassed and

apologized to her for thinking she was a spy. I think he learned that assumptions

without a lot of information are often incorrect. In the future, I think he will stop

himself before making assumptions and try to get more information.

5. Read the story, “The Football Spy”. Rewrite this story (in a much shorter version) from a
different character’s point of view. Make sure you include key details from the text.
I had just gotten home from watching and sketching at the boys’ football practice when I

heard a knock on my door. To my surprise, it was Liam and his brother. I wasn’t quite sure what

they wanted, but I invited them in for cookies and lemonade. After a bit of chatting about

football, Liam started acting funny and ran towards my sketch book. He looked quite

confused as he flipped through the pages. I asked him why he grabbed my sketch book, and

he said he thought I was a spy for Lanville. I laughed so hard at this. Me? A spy? I explained to

the boys that I like drawing action shots, and I agreed to come back to practice next week to

sketch the team again. I think the boys learned a lesson about making assumptions, and I got

a good laugh out of the situation.
