EDITOR’S
NOTE
“The only constant in life is Change.” - Heraclitus

Sometimes it feels like we are constantly waking up to a new world, to new dangers and
therefore, new challenges. At the time of writing this, COVID19 is causing mass hysteria. Climate
change prevails. Australian bushfires continue to blaze a trail visible from space.

Apocalypse seems like a fitting, albeit dramatic, description of the current situation; a word syn-
onymous with death, destruction and the end of the world. However, before it was apocalypse
in English, it meant something else in Ancient Greek. Apokálupsis, the revelation of knowledge,
an unveiling of things not previously known.

Perhaps recent events should not be seen as the harbinger of the end, but more a chance to
look at the events unfolding, and re-evaluate our actions going forward.

In these worrying times, Wuhan has become the eye in the storm that is COVID-19. The city has
become defined as the disease’s epicentre, blinding people to the city rich in centuries of heri-
tage and culture, boiling it down to a virus. We hope our cover story – Bridges of Wuhan – and
the other stories featuring the essence of Wuhan will become more than just an appreciation of
architecture, it is a metaphor for us to build bonds. We hope that our special Wuhan section can
allow our readers to feel a real connection to the city and the people.

We can let the world turn around us, but we could alternatively take the reins ourselves. HYPE
will also be changing and going digital. This final print version – the 50th issue – of HYPE may
not kick off a revolution, but we’re hoping that among us, it sparks conversations and ignites
movement.
