Phasianidae
Description: The rock partridge is a rotund bird (32–35 cm long), with a wingspan around 50
cm. Males can weigh from 550 to 850 g, and females from 410 to 720 g. It has a light brown
back, grey breast and buff belly. The face is white with a black gorget. It has rufous-streaked
flanks and red legs. Sexes are similar, the female slightly smaller in size and lacking the spur.
Life style: Chukar partridge is a resident bird in dry, open and often hilly areas. It is not found in
areas of high humidity or rainfall. It roosts on rocky slopes or under shrubs. In the non-breeding
season they are found in small coveys of 10 or more (up to 50) birds. During winter, Chukar
partridges descend into the valleys and feed in fields. When disturbed, they prefer to run rather
than fly, but if necessary they fly a short distance on rounded wings. This species is not
migratory.
Reproduction: The breeding season is in summer. Males perform tidbitting displays, a form of
courtship feeding where the male pecks at food and a female may visit to peck in response.
Males are monogamous. Females lay about 7 to 14 small white eggs. In captivity they can lay an
egg each day during the breeding season if eggs are collected daily. The eggs hatch in about 23–
25 days. Chicks join their parents in foraging and will soon join the chicks of other members of
the covey.
Fun facts: Chukar partridge is culturally very important in Eurasia, and it is the national bird of
Pakistan. For these birds is said to be in love with the moon and to gaze at it constantly. Because
of their pugnacious behavior during the breeding season they are kept in some areas as fighting
birds.
