CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction

The Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy (MNMA) is initially a product of Kivukoni College.

In February, 1958 the National Conference of TANU which was held in Tabor passed a

Resolution to establish a college for adults in the lines of Ruskin College in Oxford. The College

was to be a tool for spreading understanding of social, political and economic problems facing

underdeveloped countries such as Tanganyika among people who were likely to become leaders

in newly independent country but who did not have qualifications necessary to enter educational

institutions. The Adult College was formally established on 29 July 1961 as a private company

under Companies Ordinance (Cap 212). The Institution was given the name Kivukoni College.

While inaugurating Kivukoni College, Mwalimu, the President of TANU and the Prime Minister

of Tanganyika by then had this to say about the name of the College. “The name of this College

is significant. It is not just the question of the site being of crossing place physically. Tanganyika

itself is at the crossing place now; on December 9th, we assume new and great responsibilities.

We shall need a strong and able crew to affect a safe journey, and every student must become

part of that crew. But first he/she has his/her own crossing to make; a crossing to wide

understanding and to new opportunities for service”. Regarding the adult college, Mwalimu said

Kivukoni College is not intended to be a College for an Elite, it is intended to make a

contribution to the development of all the people. To come here as a student is to be given a

wonderful opportunity and a privilege. The responsibility is proportionately great. If any student

ever tried to divorce himself/herself from the people who indirectly sent him/her here he/she

would be abusing the privilege but I do not believe that will happen. The graduates of Kivukoni

1
must be like the yeast in a loaf, effective because it cannot be isolated, its presence being known

by the work it had done.” The College opened with 43 students only. Subjects taught were

Political Science, History, Sociology, Literature, Geography, Administration, Law, Modern

Languages plus other relevant subjects. In 1971 Kivukoni College was transformed into an

Ideological College. The College was considered best suited to inculcate the Party Ideology of

Socialism and Self- Reliance. The main functions of Kivukoni Ideological College were: To

spread and reinforce the ideology of the Party (TANU) through interpreting, teaching, analyzing

and defending it and in so doing raise the level of understanding of leaders and masses at large.

1.1. Background of the project

Smart doors System is an electromechanical locking device that Grant access to open when a

correct password and fingerprint match provided by authorized user. Smart doors system are

high tech products that can be implemented in any door to secure the activities of the door.

Currently, Employee is required to obtain physical keys so as to open the door provided only

few keys are available and sometime missed and cause disturbance. So the smart door system

it will be the best alternative to overcome challenge.

1.2. Problems of existing system

i. The loss of keys; when this happen, student has to wait outside for long time

ii. Wastage of time; since there are many keys in store, it took long to find the right keys

for your door.

iii. In sufficient security; since physical keys can be easy copied by unauthorized person

who can bring damage.

iv. Recovery cost; if key get lost a new lock would have to bought so as to recover the

security level. This is more expensive as compared to hard reset in a proposed system.

2
1.3. Proposed system

Smart doors System is an electromechanical locking device that Grant access to open when a

correct password and fingerprint match provided by authorized user. Smart doors systems are

high tech products that can be implemented in any door to secure the activities of the door.

Currently, Employee is required to obtain physical keys so as to open the door provided only

few keys are available and sometime missed and cause disturbance. So the smart door system

it will be the best alternative to overcome challenge.

Block diagram of proposed system

Figure 1: Block diagram of proposed smart door system

Explanation of block diagram

 Keypad

This is used as input device where user input a data in to the system. There are different types of

keypads some of them are numeric only while other are alphanumeric.

The purpose of keypad in this project is to enable the user to enter data such as PIN Code and

selecting one of option menu list.

Due to the nature of data we have we propose to use 4x3 numeric keyboard.

 Finger Print

4
Finger print module enable fingerprints of users of the door to be enrolled in system. Before any

user that can use the doors fingerprint image is matched against the fingerprints in the database

while users with no match in the database are prevented from opening the doors.

 Control Unit

A control unit acts as brain of these systems which take the input condition and generate desired

output decision. The control unit proposed here must be able of handle more than two input

signal and provide decision to more than two outputs. The cheapest control unit such as PIC,

ATMEL 328 microcontroller can be used.

 Solenoid lock

This solenoid is an electronic lock, designed for a door. Normally the lock is active so you can't

open the door because the solenoid bolt is in the way. It does not use any power in this state.

When 9-12VDC is applied, the slug pulls in so it doesn't stick out anymore and the door can be

opened.

 Display unit

This is used to display the information to the user about the process under taken. There are

various types of displays, some of them are limited to numeric only while other for alpha

numeric.

For this system we propose to use alphanumeric display such as LCD display with back light to

as to increase the scope of display and make it easy visible by user respectively.

 Power supply

5
A power supply is an electrical device that supplies electric power to an electrical load. The

primary function of a power supply is to convert electric current from a source to the

correct voltage, current, and frequency to power the load. As a result, power supplies are

sometimes referred to as electric power converters.

CHAPTER THREE

3.0 Project approach

On this chapter I will explains the steps and procedure which have been used in order to archive

the objectives of the project. It is important to fulfill the planning for implementation phase. The

following are the steps that use to complete my project.

The waterfall model is a relatively linear sequential design approach for certain areas of

engineering design. In hardware development, it tends to be among the less iterative and flexible

approaches, as progress flows in largely one direction ("downwards" like a waterfall) through the

phases of conception, initiation, analysis, design, construction, testing, deployment and

maintenance. By using this waterfall allows users to review all phases until the users are satisfied

with the smart doors system. Waterfall model approach is used as a model of smart doors system

Figure 2: Waterfall model

10
3.1. Feasibility study

Economical feasibility study: during the planning phase you should be plan benefit and cost

of a system you want to develop, so when you want to develop a new system the main aim of

this system to design smart door locking system that will require a valid password and

fingerprint match of the authorized person so as to grant access. I plan to develop this system

which have high cost compare existing system because this system contain hardware and

software. Also this system have high number of hardware requirements. After I will

accomplish to develop this system I will increase my knowledge and new idea thought this

system. I will benefit in economic when sale this project for public area for example in bank,

college etc.

Technical feasibility study: I take this chance to use my techniques to interface this system for

now day new technology every day expand so I interface this system from low level to high new

technology is not mean that I complete to interface this project there is another developer will

come to interface this project to move another level. Also during this project I will going to use

all technical in order to success my project like ask a people who have experience about a

hardware development system.

Legal feasibility study: This project in legal there is no any obstacle to develop this system

because some area use doors to Interning inside due to avoid disturbance and some area use

smart lock for security and protect their resources like bank, laboratory, and so on.

Social feasibility study: In social this project will going to solve problem of loss of key and

reduce disturbance between staff.

 Study of Existing System

This part would be comprised of all descriptions which conce0rning with existing

system.

 Data collection

In this part all necessary and relevant information which are required to be

collected would be demonstrated in detail. The best selection of components will

be done according to the collected data. The data collected in a preliminary stage

is aimed to demonstrate the existence of the problem and fig out the general

requirement for proposed system.

During the data collection, data were collected through the following methods;

12
i. Interviewing the owner and different customers of laboratory currently, Interview also

conducted to other organization in order to collect other significant feedback for further

information and broader knowledge on the topic for the development of the study.

ii. Observation on the physical construction at MNMA, Observation and research of related

studies were the instruments used in the entire study. Self structured and questionnaire

which reflects the necessary questions for gathering data related to the current status and

the problems that respond encountered in terms of access control as well as monitoring of

entries in the computer laboratories was used to gather the necessary inputs during the

observation.

 Data Analysis

In this part different types and numerical values of the system components will be

obtained by mathematical calculations basing on the collected data.

 Designing of the system

After doing the data analysis and designing, the different parts of the designed

circuit will be designed. Also the designing will be done using simulation tools

(Electric door strike, circuit board) and the other hardware parts.

 Implementation and testing the prototype

After having completed implementation of the circuit, it should be tested to see if

it is working properly and if the project objectives have been met and succeeded.

If the system works well when simulated, then the hardware interconnection will

be done on the printed circuit board (PCB).
