The fundamental purpose of Marketing is to create
value by developing a variety of offerings, including
goods, services, and ideas, to satisfy customer needs.

Price: Capturing Value
• Price is everything a buyer gives up (money, time, energy) in
exchange for the product.
• How much are customers willing to pay and can a profit can be
made at that point?
1. Cost-plus pricing—simply calculating your costs and
adding a mark-up
2. Competitive pricing—setting a price based on what the
competition charges
3. Price skimming—setting a high price and lowering it as the
market evolves
4. Penetration pricing—setting a price low to enter a
competitive market and raising it later
5. Price bundling—combining products and/or services to
increase value, and therefore price
Place: Delivering the Value Proposition
• Place, or supply chain management (from
manufacturer to retailer to consumer), describes
all activities necessary to get the product to the
right customer when the customer wants it.

Unilever in Brazil
In this case assignment, you need to answer the following
questions:
1. Should Unilever divert money from its premium brands to invest in a
lower-margin segment of the market?
2. Unilever already has three detergent brands with distinct positioning.
Does it need t develop a new brans with a new value proposition or
can it reposition its existing brands or use a brand extension?.
3. What price, product, promotion, and distribution strategy would allow
Unilever to deliver value to low-income consumers without
cannibalizing its own premium brands too heavily? Is it just a matter
of price?.
