To test the effects of alcohol on attractiveness by gender, attractiveness scores were

analyzed using a 2X2 between subjects ANOVA. Gender (male, female) is the first factor and
alcohol consumption (none, two pints) is the other. The first two tables provide a summary of
these results. The ANOVA showed no statistically significant main effect of gender on
attractiveness scores, F(1,44)=1.429 p=.238 and a statistically significant main effect of alcohol
consumption on attractiveness scores, F=(1,44)=8.050, p=.007, eta squared =.16. Additionally,
the interaction between gender and alcohol consumption was statistically significant, F(1,44)=
9.478, p=.004, eta squared=.18. To explore the nature of the interaction, tests of the simple main
effects were performed. The simple effect of male gender with alcohol consumption was
statistically significant, F(1,22)=12.379, p=.002, eta squared=.360. In contrast, the simple effect
of female gender with alcohol consumption was not statistically significant, F(1,22)=.050,
p=.826. Alcohol consumption only affected males. So, when males consume alcohol their ratings
of the attractiveness of others significantly increases. On the other hand, the attractiveness rating
given by females is not significantly impacted by the consumption of alcohol.
