Tourism Crises
The tourism crisis may be due to economic, political, socio-cultural, and environmental domains.
The decline in currency exchange and the backing out of investors in the country could cause an
Economic Tourism crisis. Terrorism and war can be the cause of the Political Tourism crisis.
While the crimes that occur in the tourist destination area is the reason for the Socio-cultural
Tourism crisis. Earthquakes and floods are under the Environmental crisis as well as the spread
of diseases. Last is the Technological crisis that results from computer system failure.
(Henderson, 2007)
This year 2020, the Philippines is severely affected by the Environmental Tourism crisis. In the
first month of the year, the Taal Volcano, one of the tourist destinations in the Philippines,
erupted. While tourism in the area has not recovered much, it has been followed by the spread of
a pandemic called Corona Virus or COVID19. Tourism in the Taal volcano and its surrounding
areas has been severely affected by the eruption of the Volcano on January 13, 2020. The Taal
volcano is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country by the tourist who wants
adventure and nature trips, but due to the environmental crisis caused by the volcanic eruption,
almost everything was covered by ashes. The president of the Philippines declared that the island
is off limit, it is for the safety of the people living there and for the tourists. Tourism is no longer
recommended in the place. (Adel, 2020) There are tourists affected as a result, they were
transferred to a place where they were safe and some tourists could not return to their places
because the plane's flights were canceled. (Schofield, 2020)
Just a few months later, there was the first case of Covid19 in the Philippines, it came from a
Chinese tourist from the Wuhan city where the virus started. (DANCEL, 2020) And now, the
tourism industry has been severely affected, in April 2020, 50% lost in the tourist arrivals in the
country. (Cigaral, 2020)
In all tourism crises, the environmental tourism crisis is the most difficult to solve, because it
comes from natural events such as volcanic eruptions that cannot be stopped by anyone nor can it
be predicted.
