 THE NEW BISHOP OF LEWES HAS ARRIVED
We are thankful that the Rt Reverend Will Hazlewood’s
appointment as the new suffragen bishop of Lewes was
not hampered by the lockdown. Bishop Will has not
only been consecrated and installed, he has also been
in touch with the Rector and is looking forward to
visiting the benefice very soon. We are delighted that Bulletin - News
Bishop Will is going to record a sermon for the
benefice services on 20th September.

Works on the Tower - update from Richard Martin

Following the erection of the scaffolding and
completion of much of the pointing to the north
elevation it was discovered that there was a large
void (pictured below) in the centre of the tower wall,
originally occupied by a medieval timber beam. On
further investigation it was found that this void also
ran through the west elevation as well and probably
continued in the south elevation but this was, we
understand, filled with concrete back in the 1950’s /
60’s.
As a result of the discovery we will now require a
full faculty for the works, and have brought in
experts from the Diocesan Advisory Committee,
Archaeologists, Saxon
Church specialists,
etc. They wish to carry
out surveys and
inspections and
produce drawings to
record how they
consider the tower
was originally built.
This is all going to
take time and extra
money, (for which
grants may be
available,) so it has
been decided that we
will complete the
existing work and take
down the scaffolding
and deal with the void when everyone has decided
exactly what is required probably sometime next
year.
It is probably the existence of this void that has
caused all the dampness in the tower as the timber
beams which have probably been there since the
tower was built have been decaying over the
centuries and have acted as giant sponges gradually
releasing the water.
The total cost of these works to date, have been
covered by an unexpected sum received from the
sale of the vicarage some years ago and we will keep
you updated as explorations continue.
